PawnShop is pleased to present Shelf Life
a group show exhibiting five emerging Los Angeles based artists
contemplating the importance of the disposable that augments and
assists our lives.
The
impetus of the exhibition arose from a perplexing incident in which a
potted orchid died and had to be discarded from the shelf. Stemming
from this occurrence, the artists involved are presented with the
quandary of shelf life: a good perceived to no longer be of value or
quality and reinterprets the item to function conceptually and be given
an artistic rebirth.
An
experimental show into what is deemed useful and the individual choices
regarding the goods we allow to take precedence in our lives, Shelf Life aims to designate the white cube as the support structure which functions to display art in our everyday existence.
“The circle of the return to birth can only remain open, but this is a chance,
a sign of life, and a wound.”
- Jacques Derrida
