> DESCRIPTION

The title of Jeff O’Connell’s upcoming exhibition refers not to color, but rather a state of mind.  These never before exhibited paintings were created during a time when the artist’s life was in great upheaval, self-examination and ultimate resolution.  During these years, the artist moved away from the abstract painting he had been doing and into a period of figurative, narrative work.  These works took on a dark tone, becoming symbolic, surreal and highly personal.  Looking back at these works, it can be seen how they inform all the work that has since followed, even as the artist has moved on in new directions.
