compactspace\, Los Angeles is proud to announce the final weeks of Repeat Until\, a group show of photo and v ideo-based work by artists Merve Kayan\, Michael Trigilio\, Ruben O rtiz-Torres\, Mauren Brodbeck\, Kael Greco and Gretchen Me rcedes curated by fellow artist Glenna Jennings.

Repeat Until
takes its inspiration from Mierle Laderman Ukeles’ Maintenance Art Manifesto\, the titular loop command foun d with Pascal computing language and simple acts of doing and doing again. The artists’ subject matter\, ranging from wall fans to hole-ridden sweater s to stand-up comedy\, comments tangentially on architectural structures\, commercial products and/or repeated performances that participate in or evo ke labor\, time and/or thought-intensive reverberations. The cumulative pro duct is a whimsical investigation of micro-economies that flourish and lang uish within vortexes of market demand and personal leisure.
< br />Repeat Until is the first group show in compactspace ’s new downtown location. compactspace is an international artist collective affiliated with its sister space\, compactlab\, in Gene va\, Switzerland. This innovative organization\, previously located in LA’s Pico-Union district\, has recently re-located to historic downtown LA\, wh ere they promote a multi-media arts program that mainly features emerging a nd mid-career artists. compactspace  LA is made possible by the contributio ns of the University of California San Diego’s Visual Arts Department.

Merve Kayan’s two-channel video “Work” serves as t he nexus piece\, investigating the poignant connections between a family-ru n sweater darning shop and an auto mechanic whose mannequin restoration bus iness segued into The Chasers\, a band of automatons that play anything fro m Barry White to Kenny Chesney. The Turkish filmmaker carefully montages im ages punctuated by synthetic and organic hands -- limbs that perform action s out of either necessity or impulse\, bodies that engage in rhythmic chore ographies out of both economic need and leisurely fascination.

The Ends\, a collection of six short videos by internationally exhibiting a rtist and professor Michael Trigilio\, is a “meandering th rough understandings of conclusion\, impermanence and unraveling.” Showing in the gallery’s backspace storeroom\, Trigilio’s looped sound and image ex ist in dialog with circuitous performance\, reflection\, monotony and other secondary manifestations of invisible labor vs. manifest spectacle.

A new video by Ruben Ortiz-Torres offers a comical g limpse of the interfaces existing among hierarchical labor\, spectacle and the museum as storehouse and showcase. Gretchen Mercedes i nvestigates the relevance and output of marginalized locations with her pho tos of the Australian outback and a Wyoming ranch. The large-scale images o f Swiss artist Mauren Brodbeck portray public spaces\, lik e the iconic American Storage building in LA\, with the artists’ own adapta tions and revisions\, questioning the relationship between the public and t he personal.

In conjunction with Repeat Until.\ , compactspace is proudly exhibiting the work of UCSD graduates Kate Barclay and Katie Herzog in our store< em>space and officespace. We are also debuting our new collec tive\, Community In-sourcing Bureau\, with the piece Last Flight over Guantanamo.
