LOS ANGELES\, CA – January\, 2013 – The Ben Maltz Gallery is proud to anno unce the upcoming exhibition\, Freeway Studies #1: This Side of the 405 \, on view from April 13 through June 1\, 2013.

\n

Freeway Studie s is a multi-year\, contemporary art-focused curatorial project organi zed by Meg Linton\, Director of Galleries and Exhibitions\, with the assist ance of Jeseca Dawson\, 2012-2014 Curatorial Fellow\, at the Ben Maltz Gall ery at Otis College of Art and Design.

\n

This Side of the 405 features work by 33 contemporary artists whose studios are west of the 4 05\, north of the 105 and south of the 10 freeways in Los Angeles. The impe tus for this curatorial endeavor was and continues to be an effort to surve y\, one studio at a time\, the neighborhoods and networks of artists workin g in Los Angeles. Over a six month period Linton and Dawson visited 85 stud ios and met with more than 100 artists in the designated area\, documenting each visit on a blog. They will update the blog as they visit more artists to plan the subsequent Freeway Studies exhibitions focusing on other neigh borhoods.

\n

Freeway Studies #1: This Side of the 405 opens to t he public on Saturday\, April 13 with a public reception from 4pm to 6pm. T he exhibition\, funded in part by Otis’ Board of Governors\, features artwo rk by: Charles Arnoldi\, Natalie Arnoldi\, Alex Becerra\, Larry Bell\, Kare n Carson\, Meg Cranston\, Greg Colson\, Tony de los Reyes\, Steve Galloway\ , Joe Goode\, Scott Grieger\, Deborah Hede\, Tom Knechtel \, Lies Kraal\, R achel Lachowicz\, Lauren Marsolier\, Renée Petropoulos\, Phranc\, Vincent R amos\, Lucas Reiner\, Liza Ryan\, Kim Schoenstadt\, Kiki Seror\, Alexis Smi th\, Barbara T. This curatorial dérive b reaks out of existing curatorial preconceptions and knowledge to expand the analog network between curator\, artist\, and institution. Geographic para meters\, along with word-of-mouth referrals\, were used to ping-pong from s tudio to studio\, shifting the confines of the existing paradigm. Linton an d Dawson step into artists’ work spaces to discover their ideas and modes o f production first-hand rather than relying on a mediated experience.
