ShoeboxLA is pleased to present J oshua Levine: MONUMENTAL.  For this exhibition Levine creates a series of 1 2 sculptures that continue his investigation of genetic animal hybrids. The se sculptures are presented on bases modeled after an iconic U.S. National Monument.  Monuments are typically used to mark or commemorate moments of h istorical importance or to celebrate cultural figures. Meant for public vie wing\, they are the truest form of “art for the masses”. Levine's trophies also magnify the exciting\, dangerous and unknown path of cloning\, genetic s and synthetic biology and our continued quest for perfection\, control an d domination.

\n

Joshua Levine received his BFA from the School of th e Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA in sculpture from the University of Miami. Levine's work has been shown nationally and internationally and writ ten about in several publications including ARTnews\, art ltd.\, and Artill ery Magazine. Originally from the East Coast\, he currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

\n

Also on view at the Studio for Southern California History will be the Studio’s “LA Pinball\,” a pinball machine designed aft er downtown Los Angeles with history and geography built into its layout. I t was re-designed by the Studio in 2006 from a vintage Flash Gordon machine and it is FREE to play. The Studio for Southern California History seeks t o critically chronicle Southern California history from a social and cultur al perspective. www.socalstudio.org
