Is art a lonely pursuit with the artis t working by him/herself in the studio? Or is art is supposed to be shared? The city of San Diego has a great number of artists connected to different cultural venues. The colleges are their own creative islands with gallerie s that feature the work of established artists\, faculty and students. How do we connect with our art community?

\n

This exhibition broadens our connections\, not only presenting artworks by our faculty but also providin g a glimpse of other artists that they admire\, have things in common with\ , or that inspire them. Faculty members invited an artist to show a piece a longside their own. This resulted in some interesting combinations\, includ ing two professors who invited their children\, now adults and artists them selves\, and two teachers who asked former students\, now pursuing their ar t professionally.

\n

Faculty members include Anna Stump\, whose provoc ative painting series titled “Sexy Jesus” was recently featured in the Huff ington Post (http://huff.to/ nHLqtL). Wendell Kling\, Brian Dick\, and Grossmont professor Jeff Irwi n were highlighted in MCASD’s “Here\, Not There” exhibition last year. FACU LTY PLUS ONE also brings together our adjunct faculty\, who traverse the re gion teaching at various universities. Diverse approaches to the art making process and a variety of media including\, painting\, sculpture\, photogra phy and video are on display. In addition\, on the night of the opening\, Y ve Laris Cohen\, will perform a new text-based live work\, drawing upon his ballet training\, his lifelong relationship to Mesa College\, and his arch ive of performance detritus.

\n

For the last five years\, students in the Museum Studies Program have been curating and organizing exhibitions ac ross the city at places like Voz Alta\, Space 4 Art\, SUSHI\, the San Diego Art Department\, neighborhood coffee shops and vacant buildings. This was the beginning of an innovative concept to connect with a larger public\, ra ther than just being focused in our insular college world.

\n

Reinforc ing on the idea of the community\, Mesa College will be hosting a Pecha Kuc ha (www.pecha-kucha.or g) taking place following the reception. A Pecha Kucha is a 20 second - 20 slide presentation format that will focus on the city’s creative scene through a collaborative lens. Larry Caveney runs the Garage\, a relational space that showcases artists who deserve a platform\, but do not have the a dvantage of representation. When Nuvia Crisol Guerra isn’t in her studio\, she’s involved in the San Diego community as a curator\, promoter and lectu rer. Susan Myrland\, curatorial director for the ART LABS 2011\, single-han dedly connected over 150 artists and arts organization to complement the Ar t San Diego Contemporary Fair. Cheryl Nickel\, co-founder of Space 4 Art\, has contributed to energize the Downtown area by providing a live/work spac e for artists. Perry Vasquez is a member of The Border Corps\, a performanc e collaboration exploring the artistic process and the idea of mass creativ ity. Artist David White founded Agitprop whose goal is to blur the lines be tween the individual Artist\, the Studio\, the Gallery and the Neighborhood .

\n

After the presentations there will be time for a Q&\;A and dis cussion.
