\n

Post-Post-Apocalypse

\n

F rom December 4\, 2008 to January 17\, 2009\, artists Edith Abeyta and Marsh all Astor will engage in a series of actions\, using the gallery at San Ped ro's The Loft as a stage for process and experimentation in the public sphe re.

\n

The primary focus of this exhibition is the construction of a h ouse inside of the gallery. This project is intended as an experimental exe rcise\, loosely rooted in the ideas contained within the two artists' insta llations for the 2006 exhibition Contemplating Apocalypse\, which took plac e at The Brewery Project.

\n

Post-Post-Apocalypse takes place in a cycle of three parts\, Ruins\, Survival and Civi lization.

\n

Ruins: On December 4\, beginning a t 6 PM\, the two artists will enact Ruins\, the symbolic exodus fr om their destroyed city. In a rain of light and sound they will make their path into the wilderness\, in search of a new home.

\n

Survival: Following Ruins\, the artists will engage in the primary actio n of the exhibition\, Survival. During Survival\, the art ists will construct both the artificial environment for their post-apocalyp tic hermitage and their new home\, a 12' x 24' house on stilts\, occupying most of the gallery space. In addition\, a series of events and actions by guest participants will take place\, including curatorial and artist salons \, a cheesemaking workshop\, a meditation exercise\, the murder of a car\, a birthday party and other events to be cooked up during the course of the exhibition.

\n

Civilization: The close of the exhibition will be the celebration of the return of Civilization. Following the s uccessful construction of the house\, the artists will host a closing event /performance in celebration of both the New Year and the completion of thei r project.

About The Loft

\n

The Loft is in downtown San Pedro at 401 South Me sa. Built in the early 1900s\, the building once was Pacific Laundry\, whic h washed all the clothes and linens for cargo ships calling at the port. Si nce that time\, parts of the building still serve as a warehouse for Harbor Ship Supply.

\n

Since July 1995\, the building has been home to a gro up of artists who create paintings\, sculptures\, neon works\, and assembla ges in huge\, airy\, sunlit studios. Two galleries with polished floors and high ceilings showcase their work with new exhibits mounted every month. G uest artists are invited to show their work\, and community meetings\, musi cal events and poetry readings are also held here.
