> STATEMENT
Mandad's work is in museums, galleries and private collections from Taipei, Prague and Vancouver, to New York and Palm Springs. Since the 1980's when Keith Haring, Pee Wee Herman, artist David Hockney and Weird Al Yankovic, among many others, collected his work, he's continued to explore profundity, banality and humor, usually at the same time. Regarding the effect of his work on the viewer, Mandad likes to quote Emmanuel Kant's comment: "We feel a slackening of the body by the oscillation of the organs, which promotes the restoration of equilibrium and a has a favorable influence on health."
Mandad's best known series, "Animism", has mimicked the manufacture of inexpensive mass produced objects for 25 years and was prescient of the current art/toy movement. The series is comprised of one-of-a-kind, hand-made works of cartoon-like rubber characters, the most prolific of which is Mandad's "CAT," but also includes animals and inanimate objects, such as Bear, TV, Toaster, Phone, Tree, etc.. The images and objects are produced as small and large sculpture, t-shirts, buttons and many other things. (Animism: the belief that all things are imbued with spirit)
Mandad's materials and techniques range from pigmented silicone, polyurethane foam rubber and shattered glass to digital collage and photography. As one art critic put it: "It's impossible to describe the eclecticism, irony, ritual and humor that permeate Mandad's work, but it's fun to try."
