I love driving through Los Angeles because, every few blocks, I feel like I’m in a different city. There’s a little strip mall on Wilshire that enacts this LA phenomenon. A manicured Thai restaurant called Tawanna sits right next to a Subway, and the whole strip is made up of disparate, crammed-together shops. At Subway, the employees wear baseball caps; at Tawanna, the waitresses wear trendy, knee-length dresses. I like this juxtaposition. I’ve gone to Tawanna a few times now, always on my way to LACMA. Its food is good—affordable but still fancy enough to make me feel like I’m indulging.
