Audio Visual Arts (AVA) is a new experimental exhibition space located in the Lower East Side.  Since its establishment in fall 2008, it has featured several solo exhibitions of local artists, as well as performances and screenings.  AVA’s main draw is its strong focus on the often-overlooked territory of sound art.  For its audio program Exterior Sounds, artists and musicians are invited to compose a short site-specific sound piece that is broadcasted from a speaker on the exterior of the gallery (several of the past compositions can be heard on AVA’s website).  By way of this program, AVA extends its reach beyond the usual art crowd—intriguing and engaging random passersby and thus disrupting the typical monotone pace of one’s day.
