Miami Art Week Guide Part I - Miami Beach
by Natalie Hegert

Find the map for Miami Art Week here. It will be updated throughout the week.

Art Basel Miami Beach
December 5-8
Private View and Vernissage (invite only): Dec 4, 11am-9pm
Public hours: Dec 5-7, 12-8pm; Dec 8, 12-6pm

The Basel behemoth is ostensibly why we’re all here this week. It takes place in the big, austere convention center and is emblematic of the many things we find wrong with art fairs: for instance it’s easy to get lost in here, can get quite crowded during the public days, and often offers little breathing room between booths and works. As a casual art viewer, the best bet is to make plans to attend a talk or event, and take in what you can in between. Don’t try to tackle the entire damn place in one trip. And just accept the fact that there’s no way you’ll see everything, but be sure to visit the galleries in the Positions and Nova sectors. If you’re a collector, prioritize and plan ahead, but of course that goes for every fair.

All the stuffiness of ABMB across the street dissipates in the beautifully designed space of DesignMiami/. Elegant, accessible, and often surprising, this fair is a favorite. This year’s pavilion design comes courtesy of architectural practice Formlessfinder.

Opening Preview (by invitation): Dec 5, 10am-2pm
Public Hours: Dec 5, 2-8pm; Dec 6 & 7, 11am-8pm; Dec 8, 11am-5pm

I didn’t make it to NADA last year (an unfortunate outcome somewhat due to the fair’s North Beach location and a missed shuttle), but I won’t make that mistake again this year. With exciting, emerging and high quality art from some of the most promising young galleries worldwide, and free admission, it’s no wonder why this is one of the best fairs.

Selected events and performances:
Dec 6: Talk Show IX, Jazz Club, 6pm
Dec 6 & 8: Metal Fatigue Music, performance, Dec 6, 12-2pm & 3-6pm; Dec 8, 12-4pm

Public Hours: Dec 4-7, 11am-7pm; Dec 8, 11am-6pm

With the spacious interior, filtered sunlight, and fresh ocean breeze, UNTITLED. wins for its ambience. The only fully curated fair, the work is exceptional too. Don’t miss it.

SCOPE
December 3-8
Platinum Preview Gala: Dec 2, 5-8pm
VIP and Press Preview: Dec 3, 1-9pm
Public Hours: Dec 4-8, 11am-8pm

This year SCOPE moves in to new digs at the beach, just a few blocks down from UNTITLED. The 70,000 square-foot pavilion houses its 100+ international exhibitors, which hints at the foremost critique I have of SCOPE: while impressive, exciting, and with some excellent galleries and projects on the roster, the scope of SCOPE tends toward the overloaded and overwhelming. With so much to see, it’s natural that booths are competing with the most eye-catching, visually stimulating work, which means that the understated and conceptual just don’t do well here. The fair and its aesthetic are, however, on the forefront of the young crowd, and its partnership with VH1 has forged it as a premiere party destination.

Selected events:
Dec 6: VH1 + SCOPE Party, with Tegan and Sara, 8pm-12am (invite only, but you can see the show from the park)

Gregg Renfrow, Recognition, 2013, polymer & pigment on cast, 72x48.5; Courtesy of Toomey Tourrell Gallery, San Francisco. At Aqua Art Miami.

Aqua Art Miami
December 4-8
VIP Preview: Dec 4, 4-11pm
Public Hours: Dec 5, 12-9pm; Dec 6 & 7, 11am-9pm; Dec 8, 11am-6pm

Located conveniently in between ABMB and UNTITLED., Aqua Art Miami is easily the best boutique hotel fair around. Of course I’m biased because ArtSlant has presented at Aqua for the past three years, but there’s a reason for that of course. Aqua is intimate, with a laid-back vibe, and solid emerging work. This year Aqua Art Miami was acquired by Art Miami; so we'll see how the new arrangement will affect the character of this charming seaside hotel fair.

Selected events:
Dec 7: ArtSlant + Aqua Afterparty, with Digital Trail Space 3D graffiti projections, 9pm-12am
Dec 8: Georgia Fee Memorial Brunch, 10-11am

INK Miami Art Fair
December 4-8
Preview breakfast: Dec 4, 10am-12pm
Public Hours: Dec 5, 12-5pm; Dec 5-7, 10am-7pm; Dec 8, 10am-3pm

INK Miami is located at the Dorchester Hotel, quite close to ABMB. Offering contemporary works on paper from some very established names, this fair is highly focused, which can be quite refreshing after the total smorgasbord of other fairs.

Events:
Dec 5: Pulp Party!, 5:30-7:30pm

SELECT FAIR
December 4-8
VIP Preview: Dec 4, 7-10pm
Public Hours: Dec 5-8, 10am-7pm

SELECT FAIR is located in the Catalina Hotel, and with murals by the likes of Swoon and Meow Wolf, and exhibitors like Empty Kingdom and ConArtist, it seems to have a strong “urban” bent to it.

NEW MATERIAL ART FAIR
December 5-8
Opening Night: Dec 5, 6-10pm
Public Hours: Dec 6 & 7, 12-8pm; Dec 8 12-6pm

An affiliate of the embattled Verge art fair, NEW MATERIAL is another boutique hotel fair, this year located at the Chesterfield Hotel. At last year’s Verge, while the quality of work ranged wildly from mediocre to sublime, I saw some of my favorite work there.
