Gregory Martin: Makes Me Reminisce
Posted by Lily Scholer
Having grown up in LA, I constantly find myself trying to remember what this place used to look like. I stop at a red light and recall a time when the Promenade was called the old mall, and I think of the many road trips taken to the desert; a time when I was able to view the dry desert landscape rather than fly by in my car while pressing my car faster down the freeway.
Gregory Martin's paintings of a dry, dusty, sunburned Southern California instantly brought me back - back to a time when all I wanted to do was climb into the gigantic dinosaur to escape the boredom of the 10 east. Martin's paintings captured not only the rough terrain of the landscape but also the uniqueness of the culture surrounding the area; the half-dead palm tree barely growing in the scorching desert neighboring the bright yellow Hummer filling up for the rest of the trip down the barren highway.
Took me back and it was a nice trip.
