20140505213706-mike_kelley_aah_youth Some Closing Thoughts on the Mike Kelley Retrospective (MOCA Geffen, Los Angeles)
by
Mike Kelley at MOCA Geffen Contemporary March 31st - July 28th
Posted 9/1/14

To borrow a thought from Deleuze and Guattari, art is not chaos, but a composition of chaos that makes possible a wide range of unpredictable new emotions and ideas. It pushes at the borders of the imagination, inviting new ways of seeing, and sharping our capacities for critical reflection. Truly powerful art may even change how we perceive our world, and re-situate our agency within it. The Mike Kelley retrospective (currently on view at LA MoCA), reminds me of a quote by filmmaker David Lyn... [more]

A Boy Scout Jamboree At Subliminal Projects http://www.laimyours.com/46608/a-boy-scout-jamboree-at-subliminal-projects/ " Duane Paul’s huge sculpture of various colored, fragmented scouts have similar effects. Paul’s piece hints at a less overt theme in the show, one that gets outside of the organization’s anti-gay agenda: minorities in American boy scouts have only existed on the margins. His colorful and quietly confrontational figures hit every element of the show–rainbows, black bodies, whit... [more]

20131117054006-1 Chen Carmi: Seagulls of Long Beach
by
Chen Carmi at CSULB Art Department Galleries September 9th, 2012 - November 14th, 2013
Posted 11/17/13

Chen Carmi, an artist who exhibits regularly at the Max L. Gatov Gallery, presents the audience with a video comprised of various clips of seagulls, as they interact with each other in a public settings. The video begs the question: Why? Why seagulls? Why does the artist care and why should I, the viewer, care? In thinking about this work many ideas have unfolded from the experience. I’m interested in the intent of the artist and the reception of the audience. The work is not shocking or offens... [more]

20110214115025-bloom1 A Meditation Card
by
Daniel Wheeler at Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) November 14th, 2010 - April 14th, 2011
Posted 2/26/11

"One bee doesn't make a hive..." A video of a single bee trapped in a puddle of water becomes a "gospel for bees"-buzzing and illuminating a circle of music stands.  Grocery bags become makeshift sheet music.  Their recognizable pulp scent stimulates nostalgic and prosaic associations.  The grocery bags are becoming part of our past.  Wheeler also uses them to create a wax covered groin vault-hive at the entrance of his installation. When I spoke with Wheeler and shared my insights, he said that t... [more]

Buffing censorship at Crewest Sadly Los Angeles is not unfamiliar with censorship. Mexican muralist David A. Siqueiros’ América Tropical was whitewashed in 1932 because the mural was “unpleasant” and it did not fit the civic leaders’ idea of the romantic and idealized past they wanted to convey to the tourists arriving at El Pueblo de Los Angeles. It is unfortunate that seventy-eight years later artists are still facing censorship. Writers, photographers, artists, academics, and art historians j... [more]

20101007211843-oscar04_2 “Into the Sea”
by
Oscar Sanabria at FREMONT GALLERY September 4th, 2010 - October 31st, 2010
Posted 10/7/10

“Into the Sea” by Oscar Sanabria, currently at Fremont Gallery in South Pasadena (9/4/10 – 11/6/10), is reminiscent of James Abbott Mcneill Whistler’s journey to Valparaiso, Chile, in 1866 when the American-born British based artist inspired by the Chilean port city, painted haunting night scenes of the harbor in a blue and green palette. Sanabria’s figurative abstracts echo the haunting emotions inspired by the sea, the birth of life, and infinity. Sanabria softly flicks his paintings with colors an... [more]

Craig Goodworth offers the evidence of a body of work that spans the last five years of his life in diverse geographic environments.  Although noted as being in one gallery space, the work [which includes objects, drawings and video installation] can be found hanging, standing, or resting on shelves, the floor and pedestals, or leaning about in two separate galleries, a modified closet and throughout the length of a two hundred foot hallway for the next few days.  It's as if there is too much to...
