A Boy Scout Jamboree At Subliminal Projects http://www.laimyours.com/46608/a-boy-scout-jamboree-at-subliminal-projects/ " Duane Paul’s huge sculpture of various colored, fragmented scouts have similar effects. Paul’s piece hints at a less overt theme in the show, one that gets outside of the organization’s anti-gay agenda: minorities in American boy scouts have only existed on the margins. His colorful and quietly confrontational figures hit every element of the show–rainbows, black bodies, whit... [more]

By Jamie Solis Vintage films are known to have an intrinsic cult following. Maybe it’s because they remind us of the matte simplicity that’s fading in our digital society, or it could be the growing appreciation for classic features—when storylines were still unique and theatrics took fearless risks. Either way, we find ourselves attracted to old school cinema and the bold propaganda-esque designs that adorn their artwork. Regardless the reason for our fantastic obsession, posters from motion fi... [more]

I was recently driving in a thriving, mostly immigrant, neighborhood of Los Angeles. While stopped at a light I saw the following sign: Tax Preparation /Travel Agency. It was not unified corporate branding by a long shot. It was, however, two businesses which the investment in a single computer might make possible. Categorically it was a funny space. No one likes taxes and everyone wants to go on vacation. A perfect case of opposites attract. It reminded me of the parings of surprising, unlikel... [more]

Set your Instagram filter to "Surreal" and venture inside Matthew Marks Gallery’s Robert Gober: Sculpture Drawings Studies, on exhibit from January 19-April 6, 2013.  This is the surrealist's first solo exhibition of new work in 4 years and marks Gober's long-awaited return to Los Angeles for a one-person show.  The artist's sometimes polarizing work explores themes of religion, politics, power, and sexuality, and often represents objects from his childhood in distorted form.  His current exhibitio... Edward Walton Wilcox at Merry Karnowsky Gallery June 2nd, 2010 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Seen: Edward Walton Wilcox – Fanatic @ Merry Karnowsky May 17th, 2010 — by Jack in Shows Channeling apprehension, anxiety and reaction to troubled times, Edward Walton Wilcox presented a large body of emphatic paintings for Fanatic which opened this past Saturday @ Merry Karnowsky.  With his ‘A Little Paranoia Goes a Long Way’ installation featuring ten identical fully kitted H&K assault rifles in two gleaming glass cases, Wilcox seems to revel in the seductiveness of the high-tech weaponry whi... The_kiss_android_jones_www Truly Remarkable
by
Android Jones at 99 High Art Gallery March 5th, 2010 - May 4th, 2010
Posted 3/10/10

This past Friday I was fortunate enough to visit that amazing new show "Illumanotic" of visionary artist Android Jones. This show runs from March 4 through May 4, 2010 at the imaginative 99 High Art Collective on the quaint Abbot Kinney Blvd. in Venice Beach. The exhibit is mostly composed of electric dependent works of art. These are glass images with light boxes projected through the back. Through his amazing use of color and light, Jones creates extraordinary images which play on your psyche. Jo... [more]

Kimberberryliquidenviro A must see
by
Lisa Adams, Kimber Berry, Hollis Cooper, Rebecca Niederlander at Riverside Art Museum November 21st, 2009 - February 20th, 2010
Posted 12/4/09

One of the best shows I have seen all year.  It all works great together.  But one artist shines out drastically, completely fresh and new.  The artist Kimber Berry has a paint installation up in the Riverside Art Museum that you essentially walk into.  You actually experience the paint versus just scanning it. What a great abstract expressionist painter she is.  The evolved extension of Pollock with a feminine palette capturing the current colors of the times, something the old master would del... [more]

Gokita_invitation Tomoo Gokita @ Honor Fraser
by
Tomoo Gokita at Honor Fraser November 7th, 2009 - December 19th, 2009
Posted 11/18/09

I have found another great artist in Tomoo Gokita.  Of anything I have seen recently his works seem to be an actual continuation of a linear art history.  Gokita’s pieces in the show ‘Heaven’ at Honor Fraser in Culver City have obvious influences by the Surrealists (Hello, Salvador Dali and Man Ray – maybe some Rene Magritte?) as well as Cubists references in his past works (see ATM Gallery in New York City’s last showing of Gokita’s works).  Gokita’s large-scale pieces have a consistent blue pa... Susan Brown, Marcy Deutsch, Stephanie Greenwald, Kevin Hosseini, Zoe Kakolyris, Casey Metcalfe, Kyle White at SnP Gallery December 5th, 2009 - December 5th, 2009

I saw these artists when they were a part of "Heroes for Autism" a fund raiser for "Autism Speaks" at the Avalon in Hollywood. That was an extraordinary show and I can't wait to see what new works these artists have created since.  I regretted not buying a piece by Casey Metcalfe then, so I am hoping it will be there. This show is absolutely worth a visit. The work is both collectible and different from anything else out there. Not to mention it benefits an amazing cause. [more]

Liquiddetail2 Simply Great!
by
Kimber Berry at Phantom Galleries LA - August 22nd, 2009 - September 12th, 2009
Posted 9/17/09

All I can say is … WOW!!!  Finally, a painter doing something more cutting edge.  They are big; they are beautiful; impossible to get bored while scanning these works.  And what the heck is going on in the corner? … Looks like a painting blending right into the wall – never seen that before, so in my book - a must see.  She is definitely a true artist and not a one trick pony. Like any master painter, they can really mix it up…and she does a great job in doing so.  If you are in LA and love paint…. yo... [more]

I was really excited to see PART2ISM'S work after hearing so much about it from England... especially after seeing it in the London Street Art Anthology (check it out on amazon) - This is his (Part2ism) first time here in north america apparently... the other work in the show - while not 'street art' was solid - kind of incredible actually... very different from anything I've ever seen - anywhere... but it somehow works fabulously together. just get up out of your chair and GO SEE THE SHOW! Judith is the reason to see this show. His assemblages-collages are acid-etched memories peeled right from the soul of an exhaustive artist. He's always there, Judith, unshakeable, wise, but mostly, as light showing us the way to something funny and beating and alive. The relatively small amount of represented work secures my feelings about how good he really is as I can't remember much from the rest of the show. I wish they'd collect his miniature houses and make an entire neighborhood of them. I... [more]

by
Edward Walton Wilcox at Merry Karnowsky Gallery April 25th, 2009 - May 23rd, 2009
Posted 4/30/09

Swung by Merry Karnowsky Gallery on Saturday night for her debut solo show with rising Los Angeles artist Edward Walton Wilcox. Wilcox took full advantage of Merry's new window facing the always busy LaBrea Ave by installing a spinning skull sculpture (see above). Amazing. A true traffic stopper of a front window install. Don't miss this show! Wilcox's work is simply haunting and the sepia-toned gothic edge to his new body of work is more pronounced than ever before. The two Medieval altarpieces were b... [more]
