Vintage films are known to have an intrinsic cult following. Maybe it’s because they remind us of the matte simplicity that’s fading in our digital society, or it could be the growing appreciation for classic features—when storylines were still unique and theatrics took fearless risks. Either way, we find ourselves attracted to old school cinema and the bold propaganda-esque designs that adorn their artwork. Regardless the reason for our fantastic obsession, posters from moti... Installation view, Sean Kennedy: Territory: First Solo Show, courtesy of Thomas Duncan Gallery
Thomas Duncan Gallery presents three installations by Los Angeles-based artist Sean Kennedy during Week 1 of Territory, a five-week exhibition of solo shows from March 19-April 20, 2013. I visited the gallery on the afternoon of the last day of Kennedy's show. Upon entering the unassuming Hollywood space, I worried that I was too late: all of the walls were blank. Soon after, I realized my observa... [more]

Seen: Edward Walton Wilcox – Fanatic @ Merry Karnowsky
May 17th, 2010 — by Jack in Shows
Channeling apprehension, anxiety and reaction to troubled times, Edward Walton Wilcox presented a large body of emphatic paintings for Fanatic which opened this past Saturday @ Merry Karnowsky. With his ‘A Little Paranoia Goes a Long Way’ installation featuring ten identical fully kitted H&K assault rifles in two gleaming glass cases, Wilcox seems to revel in the seductiveness of the high-tech weaponr... This past Friday I was fortunate enough to visit that amazing new show "Illumanotic" of visionary artist Android Jones. This show runs from March 4 through May 4, 2010 at the imaginative 99 High Art Collective on the quaint Abbot Kinney Blvd. in Venice Beach. The exhibit is mostly composed of electric dependent works of art. These are glass images with light boxes projected through the back. Through his amazing use of color and light, Jones creates extraordinary images which play on your psyche. Jo... [more]

One of the best shows I have seen all year.
It all works great together. But one artist shines out drastically, completely fresh and new. The artist Kimber Berry has a paint installation up in the Riverside Art Museum that you essentially walk into. You actually experience the paint versus just scanning it. What a great abstract expressionist painter she is. The evolved extension of Pollock with a feminine palette capturing the current colors of the times, something the old master wo... [more]

I saw these artists when they were a part of "Heroes for Autism" a fund raiser for "Autism Speaks" at the Avalon in Hollywood.
That was an extraordinary show and I can't wait to see what new works these artists have created since. I regretted not buying a piece by Casey Metcalfe then, so I am hoping it will be there.
This show is absolutely worth a visit. The work is both collectible and different from anything else out there. Not to mention it benefits an amazing cause. [more]

I used to have this pink bracelet I ‘borrowed’ from a co-counseler at summer camp about four years ago that I never actually returned. It was leather, studded with rhinestones and I really liked it until I lost it at a Los Abandoned show. This was back when a bunch of emo bands were getting huge and for about five minutes it was cool for dudes to rock pink stuff.
The color pink is a major theme in Buff Monster’s work, serving as a primary emotional impetus in Heavy Metal Ice Cream Smile, hi... [more]

I went to India once. Saw the most extreme poverty and heart-wrenching crush of humanity I’ve ever experienced and I really have no desire to go back. Having said that, I did come away appreciating some weird intangibles about the place. The monkeys that would steal your stuff, the betel spit, the orgasm of color, the waves of people and beggars, the poop. Oh the poop. People crapping in the streets, wading in rivers of excrement to fill their water jugs, crapping on the roadside an... [more]

I was really excited to see PART2ISM'S work after hearing so much about it from England... especially after seeing it in the London Street Art Anthology (check it out on amazon) - This is his (Part2ism) first time here in north america apparently... the other work in the show - while not 'street art' was solid - kind of incredible actually... very different from anything I've ever seen - anywhere... but it somehow works fabulously together. just get up out of your chair and GO SEE THE SHOW! The lighting in this space was excellent. It really brought out the colors in artwork, It was bright, fantastic and bold. Very easy to approach. I enjoyed the atmosphere the most, people from all parts of Los Angeles, Cholos, Yuppies and Hipsters were gathered in the same place and could connect to Chamane's workon different levels. [more]

There's realism, and then there's reality. For Canadian artist and designer Robert Pasternak (aka Nak), both concepts are fluid and subject to interpretation. His self-styled metaphysics combine elements of faithful representation of the world around us with psychedelic interpretations of the energy swirling around and through it. Martha Rich views the relationship of inner and outer existence as a more antagonistic one, lambasting the sugar-and-spice femininity foisted on her during an oppre... [more]
