A gaggle of young adults dressed to the nines on a street corner in Silver Lake, CA, is not an uncommon occurrence. It probably happens every day for some reason or another. It’s not so common, however, when the entire street corner itself is also dressed up. At the intersection of Bates and Sunset, you can see an entire block coated in white wash. The former Bates Motel and its surroundings, including fences, barbed wire, palm trees, and shrubbery, are all covered in an organic, lime-ba... [more]

Mike Kelley at MOCA Geffen Contemporary March 31st, 2014 - July 28th, 2014

To borrow a thought from Deleuze and Guattari, art is not chaos, but a composition of chaos that makes possible a wide range of unpredictable new emotions and ideas. It pushes at the borders of the imagination, inviting new ways of seeing, and sharping our capacities for critical reflection. Truly powerful art may even change how we perceive our world, and re-situate our agency within it. The Mike Kelley retrospective (currently on view at LA MoCA), reminds me of a quote by filmmaker David Lynch... [more]

A Boy Scout Jamboree At Subliminal Projects http://www.laimyours.com/46608/a-boy-scout-jamboree-at-subliminal-projects/ " Duane Paul’s huge sculpture of various colored, fragmented scouts have similar effects. Paul’s piece hints at a less overt theme in the show, one that gets outside of the organization’s anti-gay agenda: minorities in American boy scouts have only existed on the margins. His colorful and quietly confrontational figures hit every element of the show–rainbows, black bodies, whit... [more]

OKMT: LONG PLAYS   A CONCRETE CLOWN HEAD. Mouth agape, tongue spilling out onto an astroturfed lawn. A crumbling relic. Amateur graffiti and petty vandalism designate adolescent rebellion at its finest: School Night stages the aftermath of an illicit late night game of Crazy Golf and is the spatially dominant centerpiece of Texan collective OKAY MOUNTAIN’S first Los Angeles solo exhibition at Mark Moore Galle... Buffing censorship at Crewest Sadly Los Angeles is not unfamiliar with censorship. Mexican muralist David A. Siqueiros’ América Tropical was whitewashed in 1932 because the mural was “unpleasant” and it did not fit the civic leaders’ idea of the romantic and idealized past they wanted to convey to the tourists arriving at El Pueblo de Los Angeles. It is unfortunate that seventy-eight years later artists are still facing censorship. Writers, photographers, artists, academics, and art historian... [more]

Craig Goodworth offers the evidence of a body of work that spans the last five years of his life in diverse geographic environments.  Although noted as being in one gallery space, the work [which includes objects, drawings and video installation] can be found hanging, standing, or resting on shelves, the floor and pedestals, or leaning about in two separate galleries, a modified closet and throughout the length of a two hundred foot hallway for the next few days.  It's as if there is too much to... diLo - Eugenia di Lorenzo at World Art Foundation June 7th, 2009 - June 14th, 2009

The Art of di.Lo is Matter, light, sign, integrated in an original figure of painting. Her research is vibrant: the colours are tactile, the matter is impregnated with meaning, that alludes to a metaphysical transcendence. Mixed media canvases that become a metaphor for emotional spheres, of memories, of inner journeys marked by the traces of oneiric colours that create fascinating and charming atmospheres. Yes Contemporary, but with a very mystical aftertaste. An art in art, an inherent dualism that makes... [more]
