As If of the Past and for the Present Future

An implication of age compels us to craft histories for the artworks in A Handful of Dust. Their materials suggest a simpler time—products of earth, of metal, of wood—and their shapes imply function. Natural hues of a limited and subdued palette pervade, as if these artworks are remains all found in one place, all from one civilization.

OKMT: LONG PLAYS
A CONCRETE CLOWN HEAD. Mouth agape, tongue spilling out onto an astroturfed lawn. A crumbling relic. Krusty’s kid brother.
The putting green is littered with cigarette butts and beer cans. Amateur graffiti and petty vandalism designate adolescent rebellion at its finest: School Night stages the aftermath of an illicit late night game of Crazy Golf and is the spatially dominant centerpiece of Texan collective OKAY MOUNTAIN’S first Los Angeles solo exhibition at Mark M... This new group show includes some really great work by a wide range of artists. One of the more interesting shows that I have seen in this gallery, and really show the versitility of the work that gets displayed in this gallery. The three pieces at the front of the gallery, by Carlos Donjuan and Rupert Garcia, particulary the piece entitled, Mao, 1977, by Garcia. These works really pull you into the gallery, and as you move toward the back the works continues to catch the eye. The most inters... [more]

There are some great paintings by lessor known artists on display at the gallery right now. Walk around one of the modular walls and there are prints by Jasper Johns and a pristine example of Oldenburg's Profile Airflow. It is worth stopping by while the show is up. Many artists are in the show but surprisingly they all work very well together. There are some great Rupert Garcia's that I have never seen before. A wide mix of work. [more]

“I put it out there (as) an open-ended statement, like a question. It just is”, Kersels told the LA Times in 2008. “It just is”. The work in his current solo show, Passionista, at ACME gallery is a case in point. His series of drawings, featuring images of human skeletons overlapped by images of the natural world (i.e. galaxies, spider webs), ask the viewer not only to make profound connections between external and internal environments, but to think of the scope of what is “out there... A chain letter is a message sent in an effort to induce friend and stranger alike to pass it on, often under pain of punishment or promise of benefit. Today it's a handy, analog metaphor for digital social networks.
In June, artists Doug Harvey and Christian Cummings sent a chain letter (actually, a chain email) to 10 artists each one admired, inviting them to show up and participate... [more]

Buffing censorship at Crewest
Sadly Los Angeles is not unfamiliar with censorship. Mexican muralist David A. Siqueiros’ América Tropical was whitewashed in 1932 because the mural was “unpleasant” and it did not fit the civic leaders’ idea of the romantic and idealized past they wanted to convey to the tourists arriving at El Pueblo de Los Angeles. It is unfortunate that seventy-eight years later artists are still facing censorship.
Writers, photographers, artists, academics, and art historians j... [more]

“Into the Sea”

“Into the Sea” by Oscar Sanabria, currently at Fremont Gallery in South Pasadena (9/4/10 – 11/6/10), is reminiscent of James Abbott Mcneill Whistler’s journey to Valparaiso, Chile, in 1866 when the American-born British based artist inspired by the Chilean port city, painted haunting night scenes of the harbor in a blue and green palette. Sanabria’s figurative abstracts echo the haunting emotions inspired by the sea, the birth of life, and infinity. Sanabria softly flicks his paintings wi... [more]

Channeling apprehension, anxiety and reaction to troubled times, Edward Walton Wilcox presented a large body of emphatic paintings for Fanatic which opened this past Saturday @ Merry Karnowsky. With his ‘A Little Paranoia Goes a Long Way’ installation featuring ten identical fully kitted H&K assault rifles in two gleaming glass cases, Wilcox seems to revel in the seductiveness of the high-tech weaponr...
