A Boy Scout Jamboree At Subliminal Projects http://www.laimyours.com/46608/a-boy-scout-jamboree-at-subliminal-projects/ " Duane Paul’s huge sculpture of various colored, fragmented scouts have similar effects. Paul’s piece hints at a less overt theme in the show, one that gets outside of the organization’s anti-gay agenda: minorities in American boy scouts have only existed on the margins. His colorful and quietly confrontational figures hit every element of the show–rainbows, black bodies, whit... [more]

By Jamie Solis Vintage films are known to have an intrinsic cult following. Maybe it’s because they remind us of the matte simplicity that’s fading in our digital society, or it could be the growing appreciation for classic features—when storylines were still unique and theatrics took fearless risks. Either way, we find ourselves attracted to old school cinema and the bold propaganda-esque designs that adorn their artwork. Regardless the reason for our fantastic obsession, posters from motion fi... [more]

There are some great paintings by lessor known artists on display at the gallery right now. Walk around one of the modular walls and there are prints by Jasper Johns and a pristine example of Oldenburg's Profile Airflow. It is worth stopping by while the show is up. Many artists are in the show but surprisingly they all work very well together. There are some great Rupert Garcia's that I have never seen before.  A wide mix of work. [more]

Barely an artist/curator he is hardly qualified to review a b&w Art Exhibit, but, you know, fake it till you make it seems to work well in L.A., so ... Is Yossi Govrin a genius?  Who would have the guts to ask photographers to give up good (to great) 8 x 10 b&w prints for $25 price fixed? (Er, if sold.) Well, he bit and submitted five of his best.  134 of his contemporaries submitted some great stuff also. Who would turn out in droves to peruse such an event?  Well, about half of the photo... Buffing censorship at Crewest Sadly Los Angeles is not unfamiliar with censorship. Mexican muralist David A. Siqueiros’ América Tropical was whitewashed in 1932 because the mural was “unpleasant” and it did not fit the civic leaders’ idea of the romantic and idealized past they wanted to convey to the tourists arriving at El Pueblo de Los Angeles. It is unfortunate that seventy-eight years later artists are still facing censorship. Writers, photographers, artists, academics, and art historians j... [more]

An invitation to hang out with four of LA's best-known street artists at the biggest art fair in the world? Irresistible. It was an opportunity to be submerged in the environment of installation, photography, sculpture, performance, painting... [more]

I used to have this pink bracelet I ‘borrowed’ from a co-counseler at summer camp about four years ago that I never actually returned.  It was leather, studded with rhinestones and I really liked it until I lost it at a Los Abandoned show. This was back when a bunch of emo bands were getting huge and for about five minutes it was cool for dudes to rock pink stuff. The color pink is a major theme in Buff Monster’s work, serving as a primary emotional impetus in Heavy Metal Ice Cream Smile, his new s... [more]

I was really excited to see PART2ISM'S work after hearing so much about it from England... especially after seeing it in the London Street Art Anthology (check it out on amazon) - This is his (Part2ism) first time here in north america apparently... the other work in the show - while not 'street art' was solid - kind of incredible actually... very different from anything I've ever seen - anywhere... but it somehow works fabulously together. just get up out of your chair and GO SEE THE SHOW! Judith is the reason to see this show. His assemblages-collages are acid-etched memories peeled right from the soul of an exhaustive artist. He's always there, Judith, unshakeable, wise, but mostly, as light showing us the way to something funny and beating and alive. The relatively small amount of represented work secures my feelings about how good he really is as I can't remember much from the rest of the show. I wish they'd collect his miniature houses and make an entire neighborhood of them. I... [more]

The lighting in this space was excellent. It really brought out the colors in artwork, It was bright, fantastic and bold. Very easy to approach. I enjoyed the atmosphere the most, people from all parts of Los Angeles, Cholos, Yuppies and Hipsters were gathered in the same place and could connect to Chamane's workon different levels. Los Angeles, CA. April 6, 2009 – Merry Karnowsky is thrilled to present Edward Walton Wilcox’s first solo exhibition with the gallery from April 25 through May 23.  Wilcox may be the latest addition to Karnowsky’s impressive stable of artists, including Shepard Fairey, Camille Rose Garcia, Todd Schorr and Kent Williams but he’s not completely new to the scene.  Matt Gleason, editor and founder of Coagula Art Journal, recently wrote, “Edward Walton Wilcox is painting humanity’s self-induced apocalyp... Kofie'One at 01 Gallery February 28th, 2009 - March 29th, 2009
Posted 3/14/09

From the AMAZING pieces, which were expected of course, to the simplistic gallery space at which it was held, to the generous and humble artist himself, the Conversation with the Artist night at 01 Gallery was fantastic. Kofie's pieces on wood and vinyl were some of his best work I've seen, and displayed beautifully by the sweet and welcoming Curator, Christina Ochoa. Kofie was open, explainative, and seemingly a bit awkward, which made it all the more comfortable. For the hour or so of listening to... [more]

Opening Reception with Beats by DJ Phyz Ed and Live Printing by Two Rabbits:  Saturday, February 7th, 2009 from 6pm - 9pmIn the Graffiti subculture, practitioners are known as "writers" because graffiti is about writing your name on as many surfaces as possible. Although many writers elevate their art form to the level of creating huge and beautiful murals, they all began their journey as an artist by first learning to write and perfect their name.  The Sharpie marker is often the first tool a wr...
