20140505213706-mike_kelley_aah_youth Some Closing Thoughts on the Mike Kelley Retrospective (MOCA Geffen, Los Angeles)
by
Mike Kelley at MOCA Geffen Contemporary March 31st, 2014 - July 28th, 2014

To borrow a thought from Deleuze and Guattari, art is not chaos, but a composition of chaos that makes possible a wide range of unpredictable new emotions and ideas. It pushes at the borders of the imagination, inviting new ways of seeing, and sharping our capacities for critical reflection. Truly powerful art may even change how we perceive our world, and re-situate our agency within it. The Mike Kelley retrospective (currently on view at LA MoCA), reminds me of a quote by filmmaker David Lynch... [more]

A Boy Scout Jamboree At Subliminal Projects http://www.laimyours.com/46608/a-boy-scout-jamboree-at-subliminal-projects/ " Duane Paul’s huge sculpture of various colored, fragmented scouts have similar effects. Paul’s piece hints at a less overt theme in the show, one that gets outside of the organization’s anti-gay agenda: minorities in American boy scouts have only existed on the margins. His colorful and quietly confrontational figures hit every element of the show–rainbows, black bodies, whit... [more]

June 17, 2013, Previews Objet Trouvé: Jerry Shevick's Amazing Nudie Pin-Up Show By Phil Tarley   Tue, Jun 18, 2013 What looks like the faded slides of one prolific, if amateur photographer, is really Shevick's heavily curated pickings of found objects in the photo sections of flea markets and estate sales. Opens June 22 at Artist's Corner. At the nexus where vintage photography meets pictorialism, photo artist Jerry Shevick has staked out a new territory that somehow seems sweetly nostalgic and oddly familiar. A r... [more]

I was recently driving in a thriving, mostly immigrant, neighborhood of Los Angeles. While stopped at a light I saw the following sign: Tax Preparation /Travel Agency. It was not unified corporate branding by a long shot. It was, however, two businesses which the investment in a single computer might make possible. Categorically it was a funny space. No one likes taxes and everyone wants to go on vacation. A perfect case of opposites attract. It reminded me of the parings of surprising, unlikely elements... [more]

Installation view, Sean Kennedy: Territory: First Solo Show, courtesy of Thomas Duncan Gallery   Thomas Duncan Gallery presents three installations by Los Angeles-based artist Sean Kennedy during Week 1 of Territory, a five-week exhibition of solo shows from March 19-April 20, 2013.  I visited the gallery on the afternoon of the last day of Kennedy's show.  Upon entering the unassuming Hollywood space, I worried that I was too late: all of the walls were blank.  Soon after, I realized my observa... http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2011/08/art-review-chain-letter-at-shoshana-wayne-gallery.html A chain letter is a message sent in an effort to induce friend and stranger alike to pass it on, often under pain of punishment or promise of benefit. Today it's a handy, analog metaphor for digital social networks. In June, artists Doug Harvey and Christian Cummings sent a chain letter (actually, a chain email) to 10 artists each one admired, inviting them to show up and participate... [more]

Buffing censorship at Crewest Sadly Los Angeles is not unfamiliar with censorship. Mexican muralist David A. Siqueiros’ América Tropical was whitewashed in 1932 because the mural was “unpleasant” and it did not fit the civic leaders’ idea of the romantic and idealized past they wanted to convey to the tourists arriving at El Pueblo de Los Angeles. It is unfortunate that seventy-eight years later artists are still facing censorship. Writers, photographers, artists, academics, and art historian... [more]

Craig Goodworth at Azusa Pacific University Galleries July 18th, 2010 - July 23rd, 2010
Posted 7/20/10

Craig Goodworth offers the evidence of a body of work that spans the last five years of his life in diverse geographic environments.  Although noted as being in one gallery space, the work [which includes objects, drawings and video installation] can be found hanging, standing, or resting on shelves, the floor and pedestals, or leaning about in two separate galleries, a modified closet and throughout the length of a two hundred foot hallway for the next few days.  It's as if there is too much to...
