Mithila1 Great Exhibit
by
at Craft and Folk Art Museum April 11th, 2009 - September 13th, 2009
Posted 5/5/09

Upon ascending the staircase to the gallery, one is instantly confronted with the bright yellow walls, giving a vivid background to the breathtaking Mitila paintings on display.  Far from detracting from the works, the luminous color highlights the rich hues and bold shapes in the works. The style of these paintings is simple in line and shape, yet beyond complex in pattern, sophistication and content.  From the historical refrences to ancient Indian Gods, to the modern trials and tribulations of societ... Swung by Merry Karnowsky Gallery on Saturday night for her debut solo show with rising Los Angeles artist Edward Walton Wilcox. Wilcox took full advantage of Merry's new window facing the always busy LaBrea Ave by installing a spinning skull sculpture (see above). Amazing. A true traffic stopper of a front window install. Don't miss this show! Wilcox's work is simply haunting and the sepia-toned gothic edge to his new body of work is more pronounced than ever before. The two Medieval altarpieces were b... [more]

Portentous but never pretentious, the remote and insular visions of loneliness that manifest throughout Edward Walton Wilcox's work are on full display in this overview of recent paintings. "When the anxieties of this world become too severe," he admits, "I create for myself . . . a reflection pool for the mind. It is there that I withdraw to the twilight fields and amber vistas of my dreams." All right, maybe just a tad pretentious, but Wilcox has talent and imagination for miles, so he's excu... [more]

Los Angeles, CA. April 6, 2009 – Merry Karnowsky is thrilled to present Edward Walton Wilcox’s first solo exhibition with the gallery from April 25 through May 23.  Wilcox may be the latest addition to Karnowsky’s impressive stable of artists, including Shepard Fairey, Camille Rose Garcia, Todd Schorr and Kent Williams but he’s not completely new to the scene.  Matt Gleason, editor and founder of Coagula Art Journal, recently wrote, “Edward Walton Wilcox is painting humanity’s self-induced apocalyp... Los Angeles, CA (Artslant) September 16, 2008 --  Wilcox's second solo exhibition in Los Angeles this year, "Crimes of Romance," is a breakout exhibit featuring the gamut of Wilcox's diverse and dark imaginations, most of which never publicly displayed before, including paintings, drawings, installation and sculpture. A follow up from his March show, "Are You Going With Me?" in West Hollywood, "Crimes" leaves the world of tabloid imagery and exposes his darkest dreaming; hand-carved Gothic altarpieces so...
