Jeffrey Vincent Parise's A Decade of Paintings thoughtfully investigates the creative process of painting while exploring the various roles of muse and artist. The premise of Parise's art book is that sitters respond to their portraits and to the consummate experience of being painted. Rather than a traditionally passive role as muse, Parise invites his subjects to take an active part in his body of work. The discourse that emerges not only intensifies the paintings, but also produces an entire... [more]

“Into the Sea”

Oscar Sanabria at FREMONT GALLERY

10/7/10
“Into the Sea” by Oscar Sanabria, currently at Fremont Gallery in South Pasadena (9/4/10 – 11/6/10), is reminiscent of James Abbott Mcneill Whistler’s journey to Valparaiso, Chile, in 1866 when the American-born British based artist inspired by the Chilean port city, painted haunting night scenes of the harbor in a blue and green palette. Sanabria’s figurative abstracts echo the haunting emotions inspired by the sea, the birth of life, and infinity. Sanabria softly flicks his paintings wi... [more]

Mr. Shi paints Tibetan landscapes in the traditional Chinese manner of ink and wash painting on rice paper, but with extremely vivid colors and in a somewhat abstract style.
Animals of the highland plains such as Yaks are silhouetted against the vibrant colors of dawn and dusk and highlight the scale of the landscape throughout the four seasons and migratory birds populate the lower marshlands and give voice to the endless silence of the horizons. The paintings capture a sense of both the freed... [more]

Channeling apprehension, anxiety and reaction to troubled times, Edward Walton Wilcox presented a large body of emphatic paintings for Fanatic which opened this past Saturday @ Merry Karnowsky. With his ‘A Little Paranoia Goes a Long Way’ installation featuring ten identical fully kitted H&K assault rifles in two gleaming glass cases, Wilcox seems to revel in the seductiveness of the high-tech weaponr... Seeing Grace in Puget Sound
Laura Lasworth's ravishingly beautiful paintings at Lora Schlesinger began as studies of the Puget Sound, as viewed from her Seattle apartment. They remain that – chronicles of moody weather, charged atmosphere, distant, placid sea – but the view also serves as a framework for tableaux, mostly with Christian themes. The sea reads as a fluid channel one moment and as a solid stage the next. It becomes a shelf for Lasworth's personal archive of images and meditatio... [more]

The Human Form Illuminated

In Mary Heebner’s new body of work Intimacies/Intimismos there is the suggestion of the male and female form, illuminated by a selective arsenal of materials including powdered copper pigment, watercolor and graphite on rag and Sekishu paper, but never once does Heebner objectify the body. The site where the streams seep into the ocean causing a ripple in the tide inspires “Wetlands Muse." Heebner’s rich palette of Copper, Ochre, and Rose transforms the body into ripples in the...
