A gaggle of young adults dressed to the nines on a street corner in Silver Lake, CA, is not an uncommon occurrence. It probably happens every day for some reason or another. It’s not so common, however, when the entire street corner itself is also dressed up. At the intersection of Bates and Sunset, you can see an entire block coated in white wash. The former Bates Motel and its surroundings, including fences, barbed wire, palm trees, and shrubbery, are all covered in an organic, lime-ba... [more]

To borrow a thought from Deleuze and Guattari, art is not chaos, but a composition of chaos that makes possible a wide range of unpredictable new emotions and ideas. It pushes at the borders of the imagination, inviting new ways of seeing, and sharping our capacities for critical reflection. Truly powerful art may even change how we perceive our world, and re-situate our agency within it. The Mike Kelley retrospective (currently on view at LA MoCA), reminds me of a quote by filmmaker David Lynch... [more]

I entered the empty Bob Bullock Gallery space on Azusa Pacific's West Campus at 7:55 a few nights ago to see what might be meant by a Judy Pfaff exhibition titled, "The Art of Flower Arranging." To either side, the long walls of the gallery were covered from the eye level of a child into the open, framing architecture of the ceiling, with bands of photographs in series. The content of these varied from what appeared to be the documentation of bone arrangement in taxonomy and studio sho... [more]

A Boy Scout Jamboree At Subliminal Projects " Duane Paul’s huge sculpture of various colored, fragmented scouts have similar effects. Paul’s piece hints at a less overt theme in the show, one that gets outside of the organization’s anti-gay agenda: minorities in American boy scouts have only existed on the margins. His colorful and quietly confrontational figures hit every element of the show–rainbows, black bodies, whit... [more]

By Jamie Solis Vintage films are known to have an intrinsic cult following. Maybe it’s because they remind us of the matte simplicity that’s fading in our digital society, or it could be the growing appreciation for classic features—when storylines were still unique and theatrics took fearless risks. Either way, we find ourselves attracted to old school cinema and the bold propaganda-esque designs that adorn their artwork. Regardless the reason for our fantastic obsession, posters from motion fi... [more]

An implication of age compels us to craft histories for the artworks in A Handful of Dust. Their materials suggest a simpler time—products of earth, of metal, of wood—and their shapes imply function. Natural hues of a limited and subdued palette pervade, as if these artworks are remains all found in one place, all from one civilization. Chen Carmi, an artist who exhibits regularly at the Max L. Why does the artist care and why should I, the viewer, care? In thinking about this work many ideas have unfolded from the experience. I’m interested in the intent of the artist and the reception of the audience. The work is not shocking or o... [more]
