Hello frends! I am an artist. My roots take place in St.Petersburg, which has great architecture, culture and history that influenced me once and forever. Today, in the times of technical progress, mass production and new artificial materials I search for inspiration in the foundation of the Arts - old Russian Orthodox icons, Renaissance and folk cultures. I seek out look for new shapes and images within my themes using different materials, but my favorite is glass for its plasticit... [more]

By Art Is Created That Great Leviathan: Glenn Kaino at Kavi Gupta   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Glenn Kaino at Kavi Gupta Chicago - Elizabeth Street September 19th - December 20th
Posted 9/18/14

With the opening words “By art is created that great Leviathan,” Thomas Hobbes launches readers into his seminal work of political philosophy, Leviathan, in which he imagines the State as a great aggregation of the masses into a singular societal body. Drawing its title from Hobbes’ treatise, LA-based artist Glenn Kaino’s exhibition at Kavi Gupta Gallery’s Elizabeth Street location indicates an ambition for superstrata-level political commentary. Despite the impossible loftine... [more]

Curator's Open: First Peek at Our Show at EXPO Chicago

Voynich Manuscript. image via Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library We've never done this before. This year we launched our first-ever Curator's Open, where we asked you to use our massive database of art to curate our booth at EXPO Chicago. We then handed over the submissions to an expert jury of curators to decide which show we should put on. They selected Amsterdam-based curator and critic Manus Groenen's show "Cryptographics: a tribute to the Voynich Manuscript." Featurin... [more]

The Middle as a Means to an End: The Chicago Effect at the Hyde Park Art Center   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

Posted 9/5/14

In the forward-thinking exhibition The Chicago Effect: Redefining the Middle, curators Allison Peters Quinn, Christopher K. Ho, and Megha Ralapati explore the notion of the Middle, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the Hyde Park Art Center (the “Center”). Of course, defining the middle is not an easy task. The mere attempt to define “it” and its ubiquity is confusing—but this exact confusion makes the experience of the show all the more intriguing. In the insta... [more]

The British (and the French) are coming!: Veterans meet new arrivals during Brussels Art Days   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

That Brussels has a thriving art scene is no longer a secret to the international art community. We’ve reached the point where some media have even baptized what was formerly regarded as a dull and grey city as the “New Berlin.” There’s no better moment to check it out with your own eyes than during the seventh edition of Brussels Art Days (BAD), Brussels’ reply to the Gallery Weekend in Berlin you might say. Twenty-nine galleries open their doors next weekend, while o... [more]

Autumn is high season for art and it’s an impossible task to keep up with the Smoke’s endless openings. Best to spread it out and try to see something of everything. The best exhibitions will kick off the season before Frieze takes over in October and demolishes everything artistic in its path. With this in mind, I’ve pulled together a little bit of this and a little bit of that—but basically, it’s all about the Internet. Best exhibition for British Art: MIRRORCITY, the Hayward Gallery ... Well, several Japanese artists did, and we spoke with three of them about their Bushwick beginni... [more]

With the world reeling from recent global events that have severely impacted on our collective conscience—the barrage of scenes of manmade destruction, death, and disaster a vivid testimony of the dark side of humanity—visiting The Human Factor at Hayward Gallery was oddly cathartic. Of course, the curators were not prophets, but in bringing together twenty-five years of sculpture through twenty-five artists they have created a perspicacious and timely exhibition that reflects on som... White Walls Project Space hosts Meryl Pataky: ‘The Golden Hour’
by

First of all, let me just say that White Walls/Shooting Gallery is one of my all time favorite galleries in San Francisco. I love the unfinished quality of the space… concrete floors and exposed electric outlets reek of potentiality… and typical millennial haste. There are high ceilings and different exhibits happening in different areas (White Walls shares the space with Shooting Gallery and they also have a ‘Project Space’ gallery). When you walk in, you see some gra... [more]

ADSPREDELSE/UDSPREDELSE (Perec vs. Copenhagen)
by
8/30/14 Posted 8/30/14

“Why not set a higher value of dispersal? Instead of living just one place, and trying in vain to gather yourself together there, why not have five or six rooms dotted around Paris? I’d go an sleep in Denfert, I’d write in the Place Voltaire, I’d listen to music in the Place Clichy, I’d make love at the Poterne des Peupliers, I’d eat in the Rue de la Tombe-Issoire, I’d read by the Parc Monceau, etc.” - Georges Perec, The main inspiratio...
