Shanghai artist Lu Yang’s world is one of death, disease and genetic manipulation, where the politics between the natural and artificial, human and machine play out in the most disturbing ways. As the prodigy of the video artist Zhang Peili, often referred to as the father of Chinese video art, Lu has established herself as one of the youngest and most successful media artists in China today, with a practice that spans five continents. Her work draws influence from otaku culture, manga, s... [more]

My Avatar and Me: An Interview with Jacolby Satterwhite
by
12/1/13 Posted 12/1/13

New York, Nov. 2013: The digital age is currently facing certain adaptations that bring into question the modern’s faithfulness to understanding the past; texting incoherent typos being confused with Freudian slips was not considered by the original teacher and therefore could nullify the slip of the tongue theory. Psychological models in human development did not anticipate dualism in identity formation: the physical being and the digital projection of it via an online profile. Jacolby Satt... [more]

Commercials set to an uplifting loop of an indie song – the violins, the slow crescendo of choir voices, a gratifying and persistent drumbeat – this sound is reified, a ubiquitous, and entirely digestible image of faux-celebration used to market a feeling of happiness. This over-heartened and insufferably “inspirational” attitude strikes an irritating nerve in some, but the trope of the live-for-today individual is often hard to criticize, or even notice, in its calculated... Jordan Wolfson at REDCAT December 2nd, 2012 - January 27th, 2013
Posted 1/15/13

I could watch Jordan Wolfson’s Raspberry Poser for hours and hours, which is to say far longer than downtown parking affords. Having the large-scale projection all to yourself in the middle of the day, splayed out or dancing on wall-to-wall white carpeting is a pretty sweet, cozy thing. The third in the artist’s new (and suddenly signature) series of hybrid CGI, hand-drawn animation, and live footage videos (following Con Leche, 2009, and Animation, Masks, 2012), Raspberry Poser is the first to... Blur

8/28/12 Posted 8/28/12

"Blur" | Graphite | 6.5" x 10" (each still) Blur is currently incomplete. However, once finished it will be comprised of 24 individually drawn stills like the finished graphite drawing you see above. After the drawings are finished I will digitize them and make an animation. The movie to the right is the original reference footage for Blur. In many ways I see Blur as a fairly complex and honest self portrait.   As I draw this animation I am beginning to realize what it represents... [more]

The idea of the artist’s studio still smolders with mystery and allure. In reality—and often the harsh lights of a fluorescent panel—most artists' studios splay out on kitchen tables or better resemble banged-up versions of the crisp white cubes that will later (maybe) showcase their labors. Owing in part to the long-standing mythology that surrounds the idea of “the artist,” and the re-orientation of the conceptual turn in post-War art that concentrated on the process of art and not its end prod...
