It is hard to take any exhibition with a grandiose title such as Photography Since the Millennium seriously, but then again, we are just fifteen years into this new millennium. And there have not been any major strides in photography since the new millennium except for, well, the death of analogue, and video is accessible to all. Goodbye film, hello pixels. Has there been one year since the new millennium that has not seen a new release of cameras with enhanced numbers of pixels? It is the mega... [more]

Last night I attended the opening of the incredibly lovely exhibition, Without/Color. At Figureworks in Williamsburg, this show currently features three artists (there will be a second iteration of the show with an additional three artists). The first room features evocative pencil drawings of female figures by Joanne Scott. The second room features haunting watercolors by Meridith McNeal. Both rooms are guarded over by intricate and powerful terra-cotta ravens by Alexander Ney. There is a heavy softn... [more]

By: Amy Haddad A group show at LVL3 in Chicago brings together three artists that explore germination in multiple ways. Heidi Norton. “The Plight (feeding Systems).” Image courtesy of LVL3. Visitors attending the “Germination” exhibition at LVL3, a gallery in Chicago, should expect to be surprised by the connections the show offers. The title brings to mind seeds growing into plants. But the visitor cannot help thinking how the term germination has expanded after seeing an amalgama... [more]

at Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) > Chicago
May 23rd - September 6th
Posted 9/5/15

By: Amy Haddad A five-piece art exhibition evokes how office life, and our world, is changing. Eric Wesley, “DPS #9 (Pomegranate).” The movie “Office Space” satirizes white collar office jobs during the 1990s, mocking the hierarchical structure, rows of cubicles and endless amount of paperwork found in office life. Although movies and television shows have parodied office life for years, conventions appear to be changing, as the virtual and physical worlds continue to collid... [more]

Edgar Degas at The Art Institute of Chicago > Chicago
July 1st - February 6th, 2016
Posted 8/28/15

By: Amy Haddad Edgar Degas, “Little Dancer Aged Fourteen.” Many consider Edgar Degas an Impressionist artist—a painter of modern life. That he was, though different than some of his contemporaries. He called himself a “Realist.” Rather than painting plein air landscapes, using color, light and shade to capture fleeting moments, as Monet and other Impressionists famously did, Degas captured everyday movements in the theater, at the ballet or the cafés he frequente... By: Amy Haddad Kris Martin, “T.Y.F.F.S.H.” The “S, M, L, XL” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Chicago is a small but compelling show. The exhibition opens explaining how some sculptors in the 1960s moved art from the pedestal into the viewer’s space. This theme has continued over the past five decades in various sizes, as the exhibition’s title suggests. As visitors experience the physical and mental attributes of space, they may begin to... By: Amy Haddad Michael and Yhelena Hall’s thought-provoking installation at The Mission in Chicago does more than draw attention to the environment. This show reveals practical solutions to contemporary problems. Partial exhibition shot of “Wilderness and Household.” Creating artwork that generates awareness to environmental issues is nothing new. Agnes Denes famously created “Wheatfield” in 1982. Two acres of wheat were planted and harvested in a Manhattan l... [more]

It isn’t often that you get the chance to look into the workings of a family of artists over three generations, laying themselves open to scrutiny and speculation on their relationships. With the age of the artists ranging from the mature seventies to the youthful twenties, the work is bound to be wildly diversified; from the skilled and honed creativity of one generation to the enthusiastic optimism of another, with all sharing a dedication to, and love of, the arts, each exploring and de... The Paintings of Moholy-Nagy: The Shape of Things to Come puts forth a unique take on Moholy-Nagy's painted work with the incorporation of two interventionist pieces by other creators and a smattering of his own theatrical and photographic works. Due to the technology-based works’ expense and inherent complications, Moholy-Nagy reinvestigated painting as a medium to explore light and optics, while still drawing inspiration from these periodic experiments with other media. Perhaps somewhat mi... [more]

Art or Not?
7/24/15 Posted 7/24/15

Art or Not? You thought you had the art world sussed, but every once in a while it chucks you a curve ball. In short, sometimes art can seem like a joke. What if we strip away the nonsense jargon—is the artwork still an artwork? What if we attribute those words to a different image—does that make it more legit? Every week, we ask our readers to play a game of guess who, and enjoy moment of irreverance in an oh-so-serious art world... This week: which pile of goo was made by an art... [more]

Comicon North Article by Rebecca Romani It’s late on a Friday and the Studio Door Gallery on 30th is still going strong for the opening of its national Comicon-inspired show, “Strip: Caricature, Satire and the Funnies.” The caricature artist is working on a couple who looks thrilled to be getting mildly caricaturized and someone is busily adding lines to the communal canvas off in the corner. She is concentrating so hard she barely notices people looking over her shoulder. ... [more]

I have now found that space and am excited to share a new body of work that includes, the beginning of many new series of works. The planetary series, The Vision Quest series, the Lazer series, new miniature art books and of course some of my classics, Pixel Perfect, Angel Hearts and if time permits perhaps a new mermiad and new ballerina.
