by
SOFIA ARGYROPOULOU at MELKART GALLERY > Paris
May 17th - May 31st
Posted 5/2/16

by Dora Iliopoulou-Rogan Sofia Argyropoulou composes or rather moulds her visual style by means of the unique texture of the light of the Aegean Sea. A light singularly mobile in colour, in glow, in aura. This gifted painter manages to grasp with her sensitive brush the very essence of the singular light of the Aegean Sea. A light that permeates with its inexhaustible metaphysical aura every landscape that directly or indirectly touched the artist's psyche and played upon her sensitive pal... [more]

Found objects have always been secret allies for visual artists. They are stumbled upon and acquired, magpie-like, because of a private vision of “intrinsic interest,” to be teased out and made concrete later. Found photographs, too, have long since found their place inside artists’ private wunderkammern. Following the Box, an exhibition of a particularly curious origin now on view at the Indian Museum, Kolkata, brings the aesthetic power of found photographs front and center. http:/... [more]

It is hard to take any exhibition with a grandiose title such as Photography Since the Millennium seriously, but then again, we are just fifteen years into this new millennium. And there have not been any major strides in photography since the new millennium except for, well, the death of analogue, and video is accessible to all. Goodbye film, hello pixels. Has there been one year since the new millennium that has not seen a new release of cameras with enhanced numbers of pixels? It is the mega... [more]

Zakir Hussain’s latest works at Gallery SKE in Bangalore is a wonderful presentation of works to understand that originality can only be claimed as an unclaimed, seen as the other in the final omnipresent grand narrative of itself. The claim to originality that his works make in the beginning is by having a title ‘no title’. This is very interesting as the self proclamation of having no title negates the presence of the trace of the past. If there is any coincide... [more]

Think of the most stunning landscape photo you have seen. Now imagine that the scene you believed was a photograph was actually a concisely accurate pastel piece, painstakingly precise in every way. This pleasant illusion is what I experienced at the “2014 Pastel Society of New Mexico Signature Membership Show.” This show is a display of shockingly beautiful and realistic renderings of various subject matter, with a topic of interest to any viewer. Overall, it’s an impressive ar... [more]

Robots Lost at Sea: Tracking an Artwork Adrift in the Atlantic Ocean
by
9/24/14 Posted 9/24/14

On September 9th, a robot was released into the Gulf of Mexico, set adrift in the Gulf Stream. Off the southern tip of Portugal its transatlantic counterpart awaits sendoff into the strong Canary Current this week. Once offshore, these passive robots—floating spheres one-meter in diameter with sensors submerged below sea level—will be left on their own, without human intervention. Their mission: to unite in the middle of the Atlantic, carried only by currents and the forces of natu... [more]

We've had our eyes on Christo's Over the River Project for several years (Christo's been working on it now for twenty years), and every so often we get updates from the OTR squad on the project's various legal battles and incremental successes. The two-week project, which proposes to install a series of fabric panels over the Arkansas River in Colorado, has already received permission from the Federal Government, Colorado State Parks, the State Land Board and Fremont County, Colorado, but faces... Published in http://www.artindiamag.com/quarter_04_03_14/index.html Acts of drawing are sometimes summed up as dirtying the paper delicately,1 but Ayesha Sultana’s drawings in Outside the field of view, her first solo at Experimenter, Kolkata, mounted from the 9th of May to the 26th of June, are anything but delicate. Sultana ‘dirties’ the paper vigorously and obsessively, while reining in her mark-marking within perfectly geometric shapes. Nine graphite drawings of various si... [more]
