20140905141722-2 The Donut and the (ass)hole
by
Mungo Thomson at Kadist Art Foundation > San Francisco
September 17th - November 1st
Posted 9/18/14

Mungo Thompson fancies himself clever. He thinks that public affirmations of private struggle are curious, and can’t wrap his pretty little middle class head around the idea that they might be empowering. He likes Bruce Nauman’s neon spiral form… he likes the idea that it takes up a commercial vehicle to advertise non-commodity slogan. He thought it would be cute to rifle through self-help books and AA 12-step guides, pick out phrases, and pay somebody to fabricate neon spiral aff... [more]

Published in http://www.artindiamag.com/quarter_04_03_14/index.html Acts of drawing are sometimes summed up as dirtying the paper delicately,1 but Ayesha Sultana’s drawings in Outside the field of view, her first solo at Experimenter, Kolkata, mounted from the 9th of May to the 26th of June, are anything but delicate. Sultana ‘dirties’ the paper vigorously and obsessively, while reining in her mark-marking within perfectly geometric shapes. Nine graphite drawings of various si... [more]

by
Mike Kelley at MOCA Geffen Contemporary > Los Angeles
March 31st - July 28th
Posted 9/1/14

To borrow a thought from Deleuze and Guattari, art is not chaos, but a composition of chaos that makes possible a wide range of unpredictable new emotions and ideas. It pushes at the borders of the imagination, inviting new ways of seeing, and sharping our capacities for critical reflection. Truly powerful art may even change how we perceive our world, and re-situate our agency within it. The Mike Kelley retrospective (currently on view at LA MoCA), reminds me of a quote by filmmaker David Lyn... [more]

Meredith James at Jack Hanley Gallery- New York > New York
March 15th - April 13th
Posted 4/4/14

The red-and-white checked, anamorphic floor of Meredith James’s video installation Delmar, showing through April 13th at the Jack Hanley Gallery, primes viewers to expect a puzzle. The video triptych behind the green velvet curtains at the far end of the gallery doesn’t disappoint. As a form, the triptych can be traced from the painted altarpieces of the early Renaissance to modern films. Before the now standard use of widescreen in film, Abel Gance made use of a triptych format to... [more]

The exhibition is good, and congrats to the artist. A good friend of mine told me a rather disturbing story recently. He had been working with scott for years, and scott has helped him a great deal. Recently scott has not been able to sell as much art to pay his bills and has resorted to throwing events to sustain his gallery. Scott openly admits his failure, in his bathroom there is a painting that says 'BLACKBALL' which he says he got an employee to make in order to remind him how his ex-wife ha... [more]
