20130127150404-rise-and-shine Me, etc. : Narcissicon by Kiran Subbaiah
by
Kiran Subbaiah at Chatterjee & Lal Gallery > India
December 21st, 2012 - February 9th
Posted 4/14/13

Kiran Subbaiah wanted to kill himself in  Suicide Note (2006) because that’s the way truly famous people rolled, according to him. While viewing Narcissicon (2012), it seemed that he had made a miserable botch of a suicide. Because this time, his selves have multiplied, taken up residence together and freely borrow clothes from each other, get into scuffles, stabbings and passive-aggressive arguments. Kiran Subbaiah, a contemporary artist based in Bengaluru has been delighting and provoking us with his conceptual scu... [more]

20121122005419-10__112112 Bill Viola is a Mad Genius
by
Bill Viola at Museum of Contemporary Art - North Miami (MOCA NOMI) > Miami
December 5th, 2012 - March 3rd
Posted 3/12/13

Bill Viola’s “Liber Insularum” is, in a word, powerful.  It brings to mind the transcendental power of Ann Hamilton’s recent Park Avenue Armory show, “The Event of a Thread,” where billowy white curtains coupled with pulley supported swings worked in concert with the monotonous readings of philosophical and spiritual prose.  Here, instead of integrating the viewer into a strange world created through participatory installation, Viola uses digital media as a tool to directly communicate wi... Photographer funds Gila forest By Adrian Gomez / Asst. Arts Editor, Reel NM on Sun, Jan 27, 2013 “Gila” by Michael Berman. Michael Berman has always been drawn to the Gila wilderness. He’s spent the past 35-plus years photographing the area and has a book out on it now – “Gila: Radical Visions/The Enduring Silence.” Berman says his work is a wordless exploration of this complex and subtle landscape. For more than 30 years, he has explored the vast Gila, fascinated by the land and how people use and valu... [more]

A Portrait of the Psyche Persona is a word that can mean that aspect or part of one’s personality that is deliberately shown to the world, or in the Jungian sense, and hearkening back to the etymology of the word (from the Greek “prosōpon”), a theatrical mask which covers the wearer. In the current exhibition at the Therese A. Maloney Gallery, director and curator Dr. Virginia Fabbri Butera, by choosing this particular word as both the theme and the title, has opened a dual vision and in... [more]

20121012193126-wodiczko_lincoln_war_veteran_projection This is best installation in public parks ever!
by
Krzysztof Wodiczko at Galerie Lelong > New York
November 8th, 2012 - November 8th, 2012
Posted 11/20/12

Krzysztof Wodiczko's Abraham Lincoln: War Veteran Projection is the best public space installation in 2012, this is a must see! You can get a few minutes of a quick documentation at https://vimeo.com/53446621 but I suggest viewing the installation live. Like all of Wodiczko's work, this installation is politically charged, moving and mesmerizing. The brilliance is behind the images of 14 war veternas from Vietnam, Afganistan and Iraq, projected  onto the cold bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln. As... [more]

I went to the Appropriated Gender opening on Saturday night. So many interesting works of art were spread across three floors, from Kandy Lopez's attitude-filled giant portraits to the thoughtful craft-inspired works of Martin Casuso, an adorable painting ("Kissable") of one of JC Bravo's big-headed cabezones and a latch-hook rug by Kathleen Kranack that will remind you, "It's Your Fault."  Artist Karla Caprali has three works in Appropriated Gender. I could go on about some of the works, which include sculpture, ins... [more]

As many already know, I am curating the all photography group show, "F8 and be there," at Cannery Row Studios in Redondo Beach.      We had an interesting experience while putting the placards by the art tonight (Fri, Aug 2). A woman asked if she could look at the gallery and bought the first piece of art she laid her eyes on. It is one of the 16 photographs from the India Series by Hill Street Studios photographers Lawrence Manning.      If you have time tomorrow, Saturday... [more]
