As a centre of art and craft and also for its fascinating types of performing arts, Manipur has carved a permanent niche in the cultural scenario of India. The tradition of Manipur is a living one and is extremely popular. But what is the state of contemporary art in Manipur? Many among us are interested to review their contributions in the main stream of contemporary Indian art. Just to know the little more about the issue, Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Kolkata organised a week- long exhibition of paintings and sculptures of contemporary Manipur, entitled ‘ Sampratik Manipur’. The Academy extended an invitation to a progressive group of artists called Art Society Manipur to showcase an exhibition of their recent works. The society readily accepted the invitation and organised this exhibition. The exhibition as such is not an ambitious one but it reflects Manipur’s serious concern about the universal artistic trends of today. Though Manipur is reportedly a disturbed state but contemporary artists there ignoring the restless situations, are working hard with avid seriousness and dedications and are composing such themes that evince at once agonies as well as ecstasies of life there. They are trying in fact, their best to reach a state where love and peace pervade everywhere and their tradition remains well maintained.
