Khoj had invited proposals from individual artists and artis ts' collectives\, with projects in response to the residency thematic. Under the programme'CitySpaces - StadtRäume' - the thematic focus of the year of Germany in India (2011-2013) - Prof. Heidi Specker was invited to visit Ahmedabad on a residency from December 2011 to January 20 12. During her stay\, she concentrated on ancient arts and crafts in the co ntemporary city. Her artistic book 'M.G. Road' - will be presented at the o pening of the exhibition.

\n

"There will be no place in India - from s mall villages to big cities - without a road named after Mahatma Gandhi. MG Road is one of the main streets in Ahmedabad. During my four week stay\, I combed her way up and down the street at least once a day. Just as Gandhi encouraged people to weave their clothes for independence\, I crafted MG Ro ad from 27 images.

\n

Ahmedabad is known as the Manchester of the East . The city has been influenced by the rise and fall of the textile mills. F amilies like the Sarabhais have been instrumental in inviting architects an d artists from the west to the city\, who have given different representati ve buildings to Ahmedabad like the City Hall or the ATMA building but also residential buildings like the Sarabhai House which hosts works of internat ional artists.

\n

The wooden conference room of the ATMA building seem s to me like the heart of the modernist idea. As B.V. Doshi mentioned to me \, Le Corbusier allowed the Indian craftsman to express themselves while bu ilding it.

\n

MG Road builds on the vision of combining the traditiona l crafts with the modernistic concepts and cares about the local traditions \, retaining their qualities in a globalized world\, in which everything wo uld be monochrome." (Heidi Specker)

The photography exhibition titled "Parikrama" is a result of a photography residency and workshop by 13 students from the Academy of Vi sual Arts (HochchulefürGrafik und Buchkunst) Leipzig\, Germany. They worked together with the students from the Photography Design department\, Nation al Institute of Design (NID)\, Ahmedabad in August-September 2012. This fir st-time cooperation between the National Institute of Design\, Ahmedabad an d Academy of Visual Arts\, Leipzig\, was initiated and supported by Goethe- Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan.

\n

The workshop had a photographic focus on the city-spaces of Ahmedabad.

\n

As if undertaking a Parikrama\, th e students "revolved around" the city of Ahmedabad to focus on their differ ent projects and try to understand and capture the essence of it.The worksh op with the students of the two schools had an open\, wide artistic canvas. The students covered different topics such as the River Project\, birdcage s in the old city\, musical subculture\, the roundabouts in the city\, tran sportation and the meaning of nature in the architectural environment. Cond ucted by Prof. Heidi Specker and coordinated by Dr. Deepak Mathew of NID. T he workshop dealt with the image-making process through portfolio reviews a nd group meetings.

Parul Thacker’s multi-media installations play with the idea of surface and depth creating a magical tension between material and form. Sometimes the forms rise in spectral\, sinuous shapes that are reminiscent of nature’s forces: the curling of waves\, the spinning of a tornado. Some times they are like vast lunar landscapes. The artist uses light much like a draughtsman uses a pen. It defines and articulates her vision and through its manipulation she explores the universe both within and without.

\n< p>The crystal – an absolute system of linkage – is key to Parul’s compositi ons. Re-defining techniques from her study of the art of embroidery\, weavi ng and stitching\, she structures myriad materials – nylon monofilaments\, acrylic tubes\, translucent gels and pigments – that hold crystals at their core. Her juxtapositions probe the visible and invisible systems of organi c patterns and our material environment\; they portray the beauty of coinci dental symmetry of nature and technology\; and they comment on the filigree compounds of society and subject in our day-to-day world.
