by
7/19/14 Posted 7/19/14

Spencer and Dana Rogers, the dynamic duo of creative portrait photography in the South Loop, have refurbed their extensive Printer's Row studio space into a contemporary yet comfortably labyrinthine visual art gallery. This past Friday (June 6th), Spencer christened the new space with 20 spatially demanding and visually vibrant works in oil and acrylic for the exhibition, "Abstractions." The complex, layered works range in color from sunset reds and oranges to warm and playful fuschias to el... [more]

Artist HILLARY MILES Gifts Chicago Quirky, Confident and Adventurous Women
by
7/19/14 Posted 7/19/14

Art Institute of Chicago graduate and self-declared sci-fi and fantasy fan, Hillary Miles utilizes her broadly-minded, mythical creativity to forge a new kind of heroine. Her piece “Slither” features a young woman serenely coddling a live snake; another painting, “Samantha” portrays a girl calmly acquiescing to the enveloping embrace of a large, cantaloupe-colored monster. A collector favorite, the “Space Girl” series, depicts women astronauts in bold eye... [more]

Follow-Up Conversation with Artist HILLARY MILES

7/19/14 Posted 7/19/14

-You mentioned an interest in children's books and sci-fi stories. What particular fantasy characters and tales have inspired your work? There’s a beautiful economy of structure and wealth of symbolism in children’s stories and old myths that I find completely appealing. And while I love the range of possibility that science fiction and fantasy stories have to offer, I am especially compelled by the way their boundarylessness is always tethered by a camouflaged truth—I tr... My Favorite Artworks at Secession Building, Vienna
by
7/13/14 Posted 7/17/14

The Secession Building in Vienna is so iconic, that though it doesn't have permanent collections, except for Beethoven Frieze by Gustav Klimt, I feel that I am compelled to include it in the series of My Favorite Museum Collections. Secession Building is an exhibition hall built in 1897 by Joseph Maria Olbrich as an architectural manifesto for the Vienna Secession and the Beethoven Frieze is a painting by Gustav Klimt created in 1902 for the 14th Vienna Secessionist exhibition and is now on display in t... My Favorite Paintings at Leopold Museum, Vienna
by
7/4/14 Posted 7/14/14

Leopold Museum in Vienna is renown for its collections of late 19th through early 20th century works by Austrian masters, such as Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka and Richard Gerstl. My favorite works there were many, and the two top choices were both by Schiele. My first favorite piece was called "Kalvaienberg" (Calvary Hill), which was of a square format, with the top one-third depicting blue and pink sky, and the lower part the gentle hill whose sloping top was dominated by tilting trees and three clustered crosses, breaking in... Come view the most recent works added to the RSMITHINGS.com portfolio of surreal photomontage creations. Three new pieces have just been added: “Until We Meet Again” (above), “Transitional,” and “Be The Butterfly” (below, respectively). Each came about only in the last few weeks or months, and rides along a theme of nature and mystery, incorporating elements from my local area. Links to source files also illustrate the creation process in these pieces. “Be T... [more]

On Selling My Paintings!
by
6/27/14 Posted 6/27/14

I have several avenues through which I get customers who buy my paintings: word of mouth, my personal website (trixiepitts.com), my blog, art consultants who pitch my work to corporate customers, the Art Students League, as well as through other websites like SaatchiArt and ArtSlant. Customers have also found me through Pinterest and just Googling abstract painters in NYC. Each experience is different. Surprisingly, lots of people buy paintings without ever seeing them in person. I re... [more]

Touching the Abstract
by
6/21/14 Posted 6/21/14

I am awed by artists and writers who are driven wholly by imagination: Abstract painters, passionately led by mood and color and, by the same token; fiction writers, beautifully fabricating tales that enthrall us for lifetimes. As a creative person, in both images and in words, my work has remained representational. I translate lived experiences, knowing that the singular imaginative element of my work is my voice. I understand this to be a gift - my gift - and that, at heart, I am but a journalist who... [more]
