I seek out look for new shapes and images within my themes using different materials, but my favorite is glass for its plasticity and abi... [more]

Genetics Determine All The Shit You Do
by
6/24/16 Posted 6/24/16

My raw vision of humankind is presented through a series of what I call “psychoanalytical portraiture.” My paintings are generated by an intensive interrogative process where the sitter’s perception of self is re-examined and repressed emotions are unveiled. Unapologetically, my art bluntly places free will against genetic determinism. I strongly discount environmental factors as the root cause of our actions. Genetic determinism is the overriding cause for all our compulsio... [more]

Photojournalist Kevin Carter received the Pulitzer Prize for this photograph of a famine-stricken Sudanese girl. Carter committed suicide three months after it was published. Known as the “Vulture Photo” – it vividly shows a baby girl struggling to survive while a vulture patiently waits for the inevitable. It has been said that Carter took the picture without attempting to save the child. However, Carter stated that he waited about 20 minutes, hoping the vulture would spread its wing... [more]

The Dumbing of America Mixed Media Collage on Wood 36" x 80" This work is about how most Americans spend all their time looking at this shit and how publicity is triumphant in providing the pretext for success. We are all members of the society of the spectacle, which is correlate with capitalist society. Through these dated magazine clippings that I sourced from local Vietnamese-American nail salons, the commodification of celebrity culture is brought into focus. Now as you look at the work, focus on the fad... [more]

Transmitting information is inherent in today’s networked Internet Age. The information structures of our digital surroundings resemble the inner transmitting systems of nerves and their contacts, the synapses. With the help of messenger substances, neurotransmitters like serotonin pass on information and thereby activate the inner neural system. In her installation Conditions for Neurotransmission [P.O.V.] artist Annabelle Craven-Jones visualizes the mutual effects of both information systems and... [more]

Extracting a Rainbow of Color from Invasive Plants

Hyperallergic by Seph Rodney on June 7, 2016 Every once in a while I see a show that makes me feel good, even hopeful about this overheated, self-aggrandizing, status-obsessed art scene in New York. Chroma Botanica: Ellie Irons & Linda Stillman was such an exhibition for me. It’s charming and inquisitive, imaginative and investigatory. It takes plant life both as an object of scientific investigation, and as an aesthetic jumping-off point. I mean, we have been told that there are two ant... [more]

Nathaniel Mary Quinn at M+B May 13th - June 25th
Posted 5/31/16

Nathaniel Mary Quinn’s fragmented portraits recall his childhood growing up in the Robert Taylor Homes, a notorious housing project in Chicago. His new series Highlights, now on view at M+B in Los Angeles, features highly personal works that reflect on his upbringing and the people he knew who were able to escape the violence and poverty so many experienced in the now demolished project. Though his pieces resemble collages, they are in fact improvised paintings. Quinn does not do initial sketches of his... [more]
