by
at SFAQ [Project Space] > San Francisco
April 24th - April 25th
Posted 4/29/15

I entered the small, unassuming gallery space as a bearded head popped out from the back of the room and said, “Are you here to get your MFA?” “Yes!” I replied cheerfully. Because I was. I read that I could get an MFA in just one day at the Tenderloin Institute of Art, hosted by SFAQ, and I was immediately on board. If showing up was the application process, I was already excelling with flying colors. The man introduced himself as Dean Jeremiah Jenkins, and together... [more]

Adel Gorgy's work in Issues at Arts Guild New Jersey Contemporary art and social activism often swim in the same waters. The connection crosses borders and decades, as creative individuals—in art and literature, performance and song—have given voice, sometimes the only one, to victims of turmoil and iniquities. Issues, an exhibition in which a group of contemporary artists respond to political, social, racial, gender, and economic issues facing the world in recent years opened M... [more]

A Change is Gonna Come Solo exhibition Marco Pezzotta (1985)Curated by Bogomir Doringer *** The artistic interest from Marco Pezzotta lays in examining different systems in which our identity is being either formed or changed. We stand in those systems as individuals or as part of a group. For describing and shaping these relations Marco Pezzotta uses objects that function as tools for a narrative. They appear from another space and time, floating between digital and physical. The artist creates... [more]

Art or Not?
by

Art or Not? Do you ever get the feeling when you enter a gallery, that you just don't get it? Sometimes it seems that the art world is a big ruse, making the most of that fear of the equivocal. Every week, we invite you to turn your ironic eye on art and identify the accidental imposter of the two images below—you might be surprised. This week, abstract stains: which of the below is a work by a world famous artist? #1 ...one of the pioneers of the post-Abstraction-Creation movement i... [more]

Roaming the Megalopolis: Spotlight on Julien Segard
by
1/28/15 Posted 1/28/15

The prestigious Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Calcutta, will feature French artist Julien Segard with a solo booth presentation at this year’s India Art Fair. The selection of Segard’s recent drawings promises to be a provocative insight into the social fabric of Delhi—host city of the fair—and an urban muse which Segard calls "an unsettling extreme of contrasts." Segard is fearless and scrupulous in his studies of life lived on the streets. His most recent drawings focus... [more]

Zakkir Hussain at GALLERYSKE - Bangalore > India
January 17th - February 27th

Zakir Hussain’s latest works at Gallery SKE in Bangalore is a wonderful presentation of works to understand that originality can only be claimed as an unclaimed, seen as the other in the final omnipresent grand narrative of itself. The claim to originality that his works make in the beginning is by having a title ‘no title’. This is very interesting as the self proclamation of having no title negates the presence of the trace of the past. If there is any coincide... [more]

Selected by London-based writer Philippa Snow, ArtSlant's Page 3 Pin-Ups is an acerbic take on the topless tabloid muse. The new weekly series is inspired by Playboy’s Playmates, Page Three, and Letters To Penthouse: for anyone who’s ever muttered the phrase “fuck contemporary art” and really meant it. Today’s internet-smashing pin-up is notable for the fact she has everything the modern gentleman wants: an ass that won’t quit, one that Sir Mix-A-Lot (O.B.E.) would love. Sh... [more]

Think of the most stunning landscape photo you have seen. Now imagine that the scene you believed was a photograph was actually a concisely accurate pastel piece, painstakingly precise in every way. This pleasant illusion is what I experienced at the “2014 Pastel Society of New Mexico Signature Membership Show.” This show is a display of shockingly beautiful and realistic renderings of various subject matter, with a topic of interest to any viewer. Overall, it’s an impressive ar... [more]

Can graphic design ever truly be considered as a fine art form? Ren Adams has taken on that question by exploring the combination of printmaking and digital media into a collection of surreal two-dimensional images called “Alchemy of Image/The Language of Information Space.” These graphic pieces are striking aesthetically, yet leave something to be desired after initial observation. Adams blends an interest in history, science, technology, art, and basically everything about the... [more]
