ABOUT

Alfred University was founded in 1836 by liberal, independent thinkers who placed high value on education for all citizens. Today, the University has retained and built upon the strong values of its founders, developing as an institution of national and international renown that is responsive to the needs of contemporary society while remaining consistent with the spirit of its origins.

Alfred University is the second oldest co-educational college in the United States and one of the earliest nineteenth century colleges to have enrolled African American and Native American students.

Over the course of the twentieth century, Alfred University evolved into a complex institution offering a full range of programs in the liberal arts and sciences, art and design, engineering, business, education, and school psychology.

ART DEGREES

Artists who come to AU find a supportive and growing community dedicated to the teaching, creation, research, exhibition and communication of fine art and design. The beauty of our area--rural Western New York--is inspiring. It's a great place to make art, and also to make friends. At AU, artists mix with engineers, athletes, actors, writers and students from a myriad of other disciplines.

The internationally known School of Art and Design offers a four-year, professional Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree program accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Concentrations include Ceramic Art; Expanded Media (Design, Print Media and Video & Sonic Art); Painting, Drawing and Photography; and Sculpture/Dimensional Studies (Metal, Glass, Wood, Paper, Mixed Media) The School of Art and Design’s Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program, ranked number one in the nation by US News & World Report, is offered in Ceramic Art, Sculpture/Dimensional Studies and Electronic Integrated Arts.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts, Fine Arts (BAFA) degree program designed for students who want to major in the fine arts within the broad-based context of a liberal arts education.

The Master of Fine Arts Program in the New York State College of Ceramics School of Art & Design at Alfred University is a two-year program of study in the fields of ceramic art, sculpture, or electronic integrated arts.
