Good Wood, a Detroit based art show, has packed up and headed east, to Williamsburg's 3rd Ward art gallery. Teaming up with alldaybuffet for the July 26th premiere, they'll be adding a second layer of "good" to the show with an auction-cum-party, creating a collision of cultures and mediums for the greater good.
Good Wood features 40 decks from the Detroit show, plus additional works by New York artists: Mike Perry, Fernanda Cohen, Nathan Fox, Keetra Dixon, Jeremy Traum, John Breiner, and Unplate.
Alldaybuffet, an organization that brings together social and creative cultures, has transformed the event into an auction to benefit Stoked Mentoring. All 50 artists will be auctioning off their one-of-a-kind custom decks to support this important initiative. With most decks priced at under $500, these single edition pieces make a great addition to a budding collection and will go towards proving that "one teen at a time, counterculture WILL change the world."
Many of the participating artists are not skateboarders themselves, making their contribution a contrast to those artists who are renowned in the skate community. The show's balance of notable artists from across the country including Donald Kilpatrick III, Leo Espinosa, Serge Gay Jr., Matt Gordon and international talent (Jakob Printzlau, aka "Plastic Kid" and the front man of The Fashion) from as far as Copenhagen, Denmark makes it a standout from other deck shows. Decks from graphic artists Chuck Anderson (No Pattern) and Ryan Katrina (Neuarmy) round out the stellar cast of artists brought together by Detroit artist/curator, Andrew Davis for Good Wood.
Respected Brooklyn-based skateboarder/artist Bobby Puleo will also showcase his collection of art inspired by the treasures he's picked up off the streets of New York during his years of skating. Opening night will also include the screening of a series of street skating video shorts from around the world by film director and photographer, Josh Stewart.
A homemade photo booth and hotdog stand from the Detroit show merge a Midwest sensibility with these highly anticipated additions from the city of New York. Expect an evening of good, art, skateboarding and freshly spun vinyl.
