Brooklyn artist Amy Williams, in her third solo exhibition at 440 Gallery, presents a series of dramatic large-scale color photographs depicting the classic, moody image of Southern elegance: “trees dripping with Spanish moss".
Ms. Williams says of her work:
On a recent trip to Savannah, Georgia last spring, I fell in love with the Spanish moss found everywhere. For me, it was romantic, gothic and dreamy. My camera lens was perpetually pointed up looking for a new composition to be discovered within the trees, leaves and moss configurations.
Ms. Williams uses her camera to convey deep emotion combined with a sensitive use of technical skill to bring us effortlessly into the world as she sees it. In doing so, she allows us to experience the magic of nature in a timeless setting that only her photographs describe. The tree trunks and branches create hard-edged, graphic lines, blurred and softened by the moss. She captures the glimmer of sunlight and the mystery of deep shadows that fade to black. Although the subject matter remains consistent, there is variety within the natural setting: broad, flat, green leaves; spiky, short, conifers and fat, yellow leaves add playful texture to the grey canopy. Ms. Williams sets a different mood for each image with the subtle orchestration of light and darkness. The title of the show, Southern Breeze refers to the atmosphere created in the gallery. Standing before these images one can almost breathe the sultry Southern air. Amy’s work has recently appeared in a number of places, most notably, in Frog Magazine and in the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue.

The opening is scheduled May 16th from 6 to 8pm.
