In keeping with his previous photographic explorations, Ori Gersht’s new series imbues a particular landscape with symbolic meaning through references to local history and beliefs. Falling Petals took him to Japan in springtime of 2010 to capture the short-lived bloom of cherry blossoms, and their symbolic usage in the country. He visited both ancient regions of western Japan and urban cities affected by nuclear wars, including Hiroshima and Tokyo.
Cherry blossoms are a well-known cultural... [more]

Irked by what she perceived as fake happiness displayed across social networks via a multitude of cheerful profile pictures, Laurel Nakadate set out on January 1, 2010 to chronicle her sadness in the course of the upcoming year. On every day of 2010, no matter where she was or what she was doing, Nakadate reserved time in her day to induce tears and document herself crying. Organized chronologically from north to south, 365 photographs line the gallery walls as a diaristic record of this duration... [more]

The Austrian Cultural Forum has been consistently staging politically oriented exhibitions for a few years now, surrounding pertinent historical events and current conundrums. NineteenEightyFour follows suit with a collection of works that consider surveillance methods and structures of control. This topic is treated in a very liberal and often puzzling way, though the quality of most of the works is generally high.

In keeping with an increasingly common art practice of translating scientific and research data into visual forms, Jennifer Dalton’s works communicate with her audience on distinct levels. If you belong to the “inner” art circle—you are likely to relish and indulge in this rigorous display of art world information. If you are a casual viewer, these works will reveal curious and foreign aspects of the art community.

In a cavernous space in DUMBO, Kambui Olujimi has laid out the foundations for an elaborate fantastical tale of love and dissension. Consisting of sculptural objects and twelve large-scale, hand-stitched silk tapestries, Wayward North outlines the abstract narrative of Iku and Nailah within the structure of constellations. Each tapestry represents one month, providing a rhinestone rendering of actual star patterns from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, and various images of th... [more]

Elisabeth Smolarz’s Farewell East Germany is a straightforward three-channel video that explores the remnants of collective memory in individuals raised in communist Eastern Germany (GDR). The video assumes an added meaning when viewed within this personal context—it is not only historically informative, but also embodies the artist... [more]

Yet it is precisely these overlooked and unsightly structures that Dutch photographer Bas Princen seeks to capture in his recent series Refuge, Five Cities (2009). While the gallery’s main exhibition of sculptural works by Valerie Hegarty evokes a sense of cosmic doom, we are faced with less existential concerns when watching Plumb’s one-woman showcase of track and field competitions in a mock summer Olympics.

Taking over four floors of the Dylan Hotel on 41st Street, Verge reminds us the nature of art fairs prior to their restructuring and upgrade approximately five years ago.
