Statement
I am fascinated by the repeating curvilinear patterns that abound in nature - from the coiled trajectories of sub-atomic particles, to spinning tornadoes and whirling hurricanes, to all those spectacular spiral galaxies pinwheeling through space. My abstractions are rooted in these sorts of observations.
I begin by painting various circular patterns, often slanted or distorted, onto separate rectilinear-shaped wood panels or “fragments.” To me, these pattern distortions create a sense of space and sweeping motion. Wet into wet paint application and directional brush strokes enhance the sense of flow, circulation, and movement within each piece.
Finally, I re-assemble these fragments, like pieces of a puzzle, and bolt them together to form a whole rectangular-shaped or square-shaped composition - setting up reverberations, harmonies, and contrasts among the parts. Although the patterns echo one another, they remain disparate and don’t match up. The fragments fit and don’t fit together at the same time.
