Lucien Freud at the Centre Pompidou
The Lucien Freud show at the Centre Pompidou is a rare opportunity to see a large body of the painter’s work, especially a large body of his fairly recent work which is, to say the least, fleshy. The show is divided into four parts. First, as you enter the exhibition, is the Interior/Exterior room, which features images of the artist’s studio and various outside subjects like views of factories and buildings as well as amazing floral/vegetation pictures. I just came from the Wayne Thiebaud show at the San Jose Museum of Art. The SJMA is really cooking these days, with quality shows coming one after another. I’ve seen Thiebaud’s paintings in various places over the years, including a show of his “aerial” paintings of what appear to be Mississippi delta landscapes.

The Todd Schorr show at the San Jose Museum of Art is an assault. The artist grabs you and wrings you out, then you stagger away, dazed. Mr. Schorr is important, a fact nicely recognized by the SJMA in this very large solo show, which gathers paintings from a myriad of collections, such as that of Leonardo DeCaprio.
