Statement

Jay Batlle is an American artist born in 1976, who received his Bachelor of Arts from UCLA in 1998. He attended the Ateliers in Amsterdam from 1998 to 2000. His work has been exhibited internationally at galleries and museums including The Chelsea MuseumExit Art, and The Dorsky Gallery in New York, and Ausstellungshalle Zeitgenossische Kunst in Muenster, Germany.

Jay Batlle's epicurean paintings, drawings, and sculptures use gourmet cooking and foodie practices as both inspiration and social critique.

Batlle collects and recreates restaurant stationery, which he gleans from different eating establishments around the world. The stationery serves as the backdrop for his highly visceral medium, which includes food coloringred wine, and coffee stains, along with traditional paint. Batlle adds to the back of his finished stationery paintings deconstructed recipes and vignettes from his life, such as photographs, found objects, and old exhibition cards, that fill yet another layer of meta-discursive reflection in the pieces, footnotes of a life.

Recently Batlle’s work was presented in New York at Casey Kaplan Gallery in a group exhibition called Everything Must Go organized by José Noé and Eduardo Sarabia.  This Fall Batlle will present a solo exhibition titled Sauce Américaine at Clages Gallery in Köln, Germany.  Batlle’s Free Lunch at the Museum of Fine Arts Santiago, Chile is his first one-man museum exhibition and a catalog will be published for the occasion.  Batlle had the last solo exhibition at Nyehaus’s Gramercy Park location called Cutting Out The Middleman in 2009. His work was included in Swell, a group exhibition at Metro Pictures, Fredrich Petzel Gallery, and Nyehaus curated in 2010 by Tim Nye and Jacqueline Miro.
