Bio

Abner Preis was born in Hadera and raised in Philadelphia, where he earned a BFA at the Tyler School of Fine Art. He is presently living in Rotterdam and working on an MFA at the Dutch Art Institute Arnhem, in The Netherlands. Preis has exhibited his work and performed at a number of international venues and events such as De Kunsthal, Scope Miami, Twente Biennale, Dordrecht Museum, International Film Festival Rotterdam. He has received artist residencies in Rome, Berlin, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In 2010 he was nominated for the Illy Prize at Art Rotterdam. His work is in the permanent collection of the Glashuis Museum, Rebel Media, Alexander Baron, Temple University Rome as well as many private collections. Preis regularly performs solo or in collaboration with his collective The Dogs of Shame.

“The Great Abnerio Circus “

The circus was composed of volunteers who were asked to create their own magic and circus act.  The costumes and choreography were all made on site for a three day work shop.  The final shooting was a one take live recording- later edited by one of the volunteers.

“The Clown”

Th clown is an adaptation of the Charles Mingus Album “The Clown” which I changed the outcome to be a happy ending.  The Video was shot one time as the performance was made in front of a live audience.   The video was shown in the same space of the performance, and the viewer had to enter dressed like a clown to view the video in the installation

“The Accidental Champion”

Is a story about a man and his dog traveling the countryside, looking for work.  Based on the Charlie Chaplin short film the Champion.  All the characters are non actors told to create their own characters based on 1020’s clothing and to act in slow motion.

“Brothers in Arms”

A story about two brothers who are graduating from Dance school and on their way to the graduation they come upon friends who have been corrupted by Red Bull and KFC.  The Dance was choreographed the audience participation was made on site the day of the performance.

Magic Land Kunst Huis Syb:

I was invited to a residency and as a part of the residency I took Columbian masks and shot the residence of the local community in the masks.  Over 80 people participated as well as the fire department, a local band and many others.

“Sick Productions”

I was invited to give a talk at a school for special need students about my work- as a result, this video was shot of the students rapping as well as creating their own costumes and tattoos.  The Video was a concept of the student as well as the name “Sick Production”, bringing forward a great insight into their own position in society.

“The Honor Dance”

As  a part of a show at gallery Gabriel Rolt, this video was shot as a three day work shop based on “The Honor Dance” a competition between the Rock and Rollers and the Vikings.  All the participants made their costumes as well as the Choreography .

Massa Crass:

A work Shop for student of the ACII,   based on the classic Kung Fu movie generalizations.  The story was about two Kung Fu masters who have their own student corrupted by a drunken fighter.

The students all made their own costumes as well as character development.
