Joseph Akel (1982, Auckland, New Zealand) is an artist and writer currently living in New York City. After receiving his BFA (Hons.) from Elam School of Fine Arts, Joseph completed his Master’s degree in Art History and Visual Culture at the University of Oxford. His works have been exhibited internationally in New York, Berlin, San Francisco and Auckland. Publications featuring his work include Self Publish, Be Naughty, Bolo, DIS Magazine, and Dynasty Zine as well as a limited edition artist monographs including XXX and the upcoming Common Topographies. In 2012, Joseph will be a Swing Space Artist-in-Residence with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. In addition, Joseph continues to write for publications including Artforum and Idiom Magazine and is currently working on forthcoming essay on abstraction and eroticism for New York-based journal, Paper Monument.
