Roman Ondák at Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris / ARC September 28th, 2012 - December 16th, 2012

I was in a bad mood when I entered the Musée D'Art Moderne. It was ten o'clock on a Sunday morning, and I'd just paid six euros for a completely average coffee – with bad service – when my fatigue and the hour would've already been enough. Entering the Roman Ondák exhibition, I had the distinct feeling that this was not the time to look at art, and immediately my suspicions were confirmed. After climbing the stairs I was in a dim space with two video installations running and lots of glass vi... [more]

There is an unmistakable wit that permeates Czech and Slovak contemporary art. A signature. A serious but minimalistic gesture of tongue-in-cheek rooted in a drive to push irony and explore a hardened layer of underlying melancholy with a critical poignant eye. Roman Ondák is situated within this play. A recipient of this year's 2012 Deutsche Bank “Artist of the Year” award, Udo Kittelmann, member of Deutsche Bank’s Art Advisory council and the director of Berlin’s Nationalgalerie, praised... Taking Place reintroduces the Stedelijk Museum by addressing its history, the spatial and temporal conditions of the unfinished building and the ways in which artists use, occupy and animate museum spaces. The historical, functional and architectural conditions of the museum are both subject and material for this special presentation of works by local, national and international contemporary artists, who range from well-known and established figures to emerging art... The name of the 6th Berlin Biennale is “What is Waiting Out There”. It is a meditation on reality. Reality, the press release says. I’ve lived in Berlin for four years. Now—as in those first months when I would spend myafternoons in Görlitzer Park after German class exhilarated, drinking 40-cent Sternberg beers flung out next to my GDR-era bike—there are, and were, people who have been here much longer than me. Some of those old-timers were even here through ’89 and the W... [more]

The theme of the Walker Art Center’s exhibition “The Quick and the Dead” got personal, quickly, when I observed that an On Kawara date painting near the entry was the same date as an uncle’s birthday. Made by Kawara to mark the passage of time, the ongoing series implies its own end in the artist’s death, just as birthdays imply to many of us that there are only so many left. This exhibition announces its’ intentions to examine The Big Questions of Life at the outset in th... [more]
