Artist Statement

I have always been interested in the notion of photography as memory itself.  The very reason I first picked up the camera was in an attempt to create a space for myself where I could stop time and revisit it continually. For me, the space where I could do this became the negative. I see the negative as a space in its own right - almost a parallel universe where an event can be created/transpire that would not otherwise exist in reality.

I am fascinated by transient spaces, placeless places - doorways, corridors, mirrors, windows.  I have  always been interested in portals because of their innate ability to evoke the passage of time and most literally the space between then and now.  I am interested in the "space between" that holds one thing from another. The space between objects, the space between words.  My photography has always informed my writing and vice versa. I am currently writing a novel on the topic of freedom and memory and how the past affects us - this is a theme I have worked on repeatedly.  I am also beginning a series of new text-based work that deals with memory and loss, the transience of words and their continuing and lasting affect on our consciousness.  The exploration of these themes are inspired by the profound loss of freedom I experienced through becoming seriously ill - something that affected my life permanently, although one could say it is now in my past. Trying to understand the role of the past and how it affects us through memory has always been a driving force in my life and the impetus behind my work.
