Jonathan Bueno

BIO

I was born and raised in Mexico City and I have been living in California since 1996.

From 1996 to 1999 I studied Fine Arts, Art History and Humanities at El Camino College in Torrance, where I was awarded the Lila North and Fotis Korkis scholarships for printmaking in 1997.

STATEMENT

The work as a whole is mainly informed by graphic design and advertising, which are major forms of visual communication in contemporary society. This influence can be seen in the crisp lines that are meticulously painted in order to convey the idea of them being printed by mechanical means, however, upon closer inspection, the nuances of the paint application are revealed as an appearance paradox of the handcrafted against the machine made.

All the images used in the paintings are appropriations from different printed sources, mainly clip art books, magazines, pornographic Mexican comic books and even fliers left on the windshield of my car. In an attempt to challenge notions of artistic originality this approach morphs the creative process through a selective act, much like a DJ remixes and samples pre-existing music into something different and fresh.
