How often have you misplaced or discarded a negative once the final photo has been printed in its positive form? For a photo displays the reality, beauty and positive elements of a shot guided by Mother Nature’s creative hand.
Dodi Tabbaa on the other hand, favours the ‘negative’ as a means for artistic exploration and experimentation that challenges perception. Inspired by the spectrum of colour and beauty in nature, Tabbaa sets out to photograph plants and flowers in their natural habitats, and reinterprets them from the negative.
Using the photo-negative as her playground, Tabbaa studies every feature and shade of colour of a delicate leaf or petal to guide her own vision of a floral portrait whilst retaining the original form.
Her work displays an imagination touched by the power of nature and a little bit of fantasy at one with a palette of colours, which gently unfolds. It invites the viewer to see beyond natural vision and allows the imagination to wander.
For in the words of Henry Ward Beecher, "The world without imagination is what an observatory would be without a telescope".
