Sculpsite.com News

“Paper Sculptures by Artist Francene Levinson transform modular 3d Origami into beautiful museum quality fine art - that is the tag-line of her website. That pretty much says it all, except for the fact that this work is world class, I can say it and mean it! The design, it's fluidity and detail - click here and get lost for a while.”

Bio

I was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1944. My first art exhibits were held in my mother’s kitchen. Her patronage was invaluable. Her interest encouraged me to study art at Brooklyn College, N.Y.C. There, I studied with Ad Reinhardt, Philip Pearlstein, Albert Terris, Jimmy Ernst, and Murray Israel. I obtained a B.A. Fine Arts in 1966 and a M.A. Art Ed. in 1969. These artist-instructors significantly influenced my love of color, form and design. My love of sharing art encouraged me to earn a teaching degree. My teaching career spanned 15 years as an art teacher in New York and later, in Florida. Teaching allowed me to see the world through fresh eyes each and every day. My art students were my greatest teachers. I moved to Florida in 1986 and reside in Boca Raton, Florida. I began studying stone carving at Montoya Studios, Palm Beach, Florida. Then, in 1993 I earned a post-graduate ED.S degree from Nova University, Davie, Florida. I resumed teaching art shortly thereafter.

Many of my Florida art students were new residents in the U.S.A. and I often encouraged them to share their multi-cultural artistic experiences. One of my art students taught me Chinese Zhe Zhi paper folding. This sparked my interest in further researching this ancient Chinese paper folding technique. I then began experimenting using this unique paper medium. Once a design is formed, it is firmly set with glue. This paper technique allows me to create original organic-like forms and give a singular voice to the unity of many.

My paper sculptures have been juried into many exhibitions in Florida including: The Scripps Research Center, “Nexus: Science + Art”- 2009,’10,’11,’12; The Rosen Gallery International Biennial, 2008,’10,’12; The Armory Art Center; The Von Liebig Art Center; Rossetti Art Gallery; The Artist’s Guild Gallery; The 110 Art Gallery; The Cornell Museum; and The 2011 - 60th Annual - All Florida Exhibition and Competition at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. I have earned numerous first place awards and a great many other honors. More recently and importantly, my work has received the First Place Award at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, “2010 Biennial,” in Boca Raton, Florida. Also, my portfolio of work has recently been awarded the Mastermind Art Grant for South Florida, and The Art Craft Award, Rosen Gallery Biennial 2012. I have lectured on the history and technique of Chinese Zhe Zhi paper sculpture to various professional art groups. My portfolio may be seen on the web at http://www.francenelevinson.com/apps/videos/

The possibilities of paper sculpture are endless. The exploration is engaging. The results are inspiring.
