Statement

Mary Heebner is a mid-career California artist. She works in several mediums including painting, photography and handmade artists books. Her series "Geography of a Face" combines photography and ink-painting on handmade paper to create an image that is at once an exploration of topography and of human form, an exploration of how we perceive and create reality through piecing together fragments.

Heebner's recent exhibitions include “Intimacies”, in New York City's Queen Sofia Spanish Institute. This multi media installation featured the original paintings on paper that appear in her most recent publication "Intimacies: Poems of Love by Pablo Neruda" (Harper 2008), and an audio loop of bilingual poetry.  Heebner's exhibition, "Mani Wall and A Sacred Geography" at UCLA's Fowler Museum in 2006, featured her paintings, Macduff Everton's photography and an artist's book, a collaboration with her daughter, anthropologist, Sienna Craig's sonnets of the Himalaya.  In 2007 Heebner was part of the exhibition, "Made in Santa Barbara: Contemporary Photographs" curated by Karen Sinsheimer at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Mary Heebner has been exhibiting publicly for over 30 years and received her MFA, under the mentorship of William Dole at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her publications include: The Tragic History of Hamlet: An artist's interpretation of the classic text by William Shakespeare, A Sacred Geography: Sonnets of the Himalaya and Tibet. On the Blue Shore of Silence: Poems of the Sea by Pablo Neruda. A Western Horizon, her collaboration with husband Macduff Everton's photography (Abrams 2000) Her work is in many private and public collections including J Paul Getty Research Institute, The National Gallery of Art, San Francisco and Santa Barbara's Museums of Art, Yale University Collections and the British Library. Mary Heebner is represented by Edward Cella Art+Architecture in Los Angeles. California
