ARTIST'S STATEMENT

As I have evolved as an artist, my paintings have gone through various transitions and series. My most recent series, the exploration of the body in individual people has been wonderful for me. With this series, I have attempted to break down the human form to its more simple abstract self and to use it as the complex form, both literally and figuratively that would engage the viewer to explore my entire canvas. It has been a truly, satisfying, emotional ride for me.

I feel so pleased with how far I have come with my art through all my different series. I have developed my own color language with which I am genuinely confident and comfortable. My drawings, which I have been focusing on for several years now are clearly skilled and graceful and carry my own, personal countenance. And the paintings I have been creating are most definitely color journeys with color being the true subject and my subject matter being the introductory and emotional form that has lead the viewer through each painting.

Now, though, I am, once again, looking to challenge myself and move beyond what I feel I have successfully worked through. And while I still use my loose black and white, pen sketches as the bases for all my paintings, copying them onto each canvas that I have already given a wash of colors from my entire palette, my approach and ultimate destination are different. I no longer am seeking the finished painting; my finished expression of color, emotion, line and shape, paint application, light and depth, subject or mood. Now, it is the process of drawing, my drawing and painting, my painting that I am exploring and seeking as an end in and unto itself.

My inspirations are as they have always been; the beauty I see in nature, the serenity I feel when observing a Still Life, the intrinsic nature of the human spirit, a line, a shape or a gesture. Now, what it feels to me will be revealed by the raw means of what I do well and will continue to refine; my drawing and painting.

As always, my paintings are rich and thought provoking and emotionally stimulating. There are moments of excitement, a rush as well as moments of calm and familiarity, with a continual discovery of something new. And now, most important, the viewer can feel the privilege of being an integral part of each painting since the impetus for each piece is what I am yearning to uncover. The viewer gets to take in more than merely a finished painting. He or she is able to see and follow my drawing and painting processes as it is the integrity of those that I am ultimately seeking now with my art.
