Sophia Powers began as a New York writer for ArtSlant in 2007, and now serves as the International Editor for ArtSlant India and ArtSlant China, both of which she helped to set up in 2009.
Sophia completed a double major in Art History and Anthropology as an undergraduate at Stanford, and wrote an honors thesis on the contemporary Indian art market. In 2007 Sophia moved to New York as a student in the Anthropology Department at Columbia University where she continued her study of both Chinese and Indian art and social theory. For her M.A. thesis she focused on early nationalist art and the Bengal School.
After a curatorial internship within the Asian Art Innitiative at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Sophia was accepted in the UCLA PhD program focusing on contemporary Indian art.
Sophia currently lives between Los Angeles and New York, and spends summers in India travelling and studying. She enjoys Russian novels, fire escapes, wine, and speaking Chinese, though she has only once tried all four together.
