Sophia Powers began as a New York writer for Artslant, and now serves as the editor for Artslant India, which she helped to set up in the summer of 2009. This venture has been great fun as she has been following the Indian contemporary art scene for years now, and has lived in three of India’s most exciting metros—Delhi, Bombay, and Calcutta, writing about art. She competed her B.A. in Art History from Stanford, and wrote an honors thesis on comparative Asian modernisms focusing primarily on the relationship between China and India. In 2007 Sophia moved to New York to continue her studies in the Anthropology Department at Columbia University. She focused exclusively on the Indian art scene for her M.A., and wrote a thesis on early nationalist art and the Bengal School. Sophia currently lives in New York, and travels frequently to India. When not writing for Artslant, she enjoys Russian novels, fire escapes, wine, and speaking Chinese, though she has only once tried all four together.
